Recognition!

Well, I walked in to my folk's house after work today (no leave-in conditioner, nothing special done to my hair, just hanging in curls) and mom says "I love your hair!!"
Now, she has been my biggest protagonist (next to my girlfriend) but she had been dubious that the akward stage would really ever go away. The hair on the lower back of my head is growing out again after having the 4" cut off to prevent the mullet look (no offense to mullet-bearers), and now rests on the neck. She commented on how I look like a "long haired guy" as opposed to a hobo (which I'll admit, I could pass off the hobo look really good), so I feel that in some small way, I'm starting to "arrive". My two criteria are 1)when people comment on me being a longhair or refer to me as "the guy with long hair", and 2)when I can put it in a full ponytail. I'm getting there, and it's nice to have some recognition!
Thanks for all of your support as well!
That "Ball" Guy
will be easier to see then.
You have arrived!

I really think that the awkward stage is what puts most people off toward "long hairs." They think of the moppy, unruly, devil-may-care, disshelved look...not what a long hair really is. They think of the person who says "I'm growing my hair long, and not cutting it."
Not the end result...when it begins to fall into place, and lay correctly, and...obviously...look good.
Why? Because most are pressured into cutting there hair at that point. I mean really, how many TRUE long hair examples are there out there? Do you see many around you?
Or do you see people who are at the awkward stage, who will most likely be pressured into cutting their hair?
The awkward stage is like a test of endurance. If you can get through it, you have passed the longhair test. If not, you'll most likely regret it and try again. It is like a right of passage.

Sorry for the dumb Q but how long does the awkward stage last?

It's been a little over a year for me, it differs slightly, but it's worse for curly headed people

A friend of mine has reciently failed the test, and cut his hair short again after 5 or so months of growing it.
All is not lost though. His brother has long hair. :)

Curly, it just seems to have more class and sophistication that way.
