How do I get started?

I'm thinking about growing my hair out. I've always wanted to and now I've gotten the green light from people I know. However, I'm want medium length long hair not like the really long indian hair. So I was wondering if maybe it would be a good idea to just keep the hair on the sides and back of my head short and only growing out the hair from the top? that way it wouldent be shaggy and it would look neater right? or am I headed in the wrong direction? Please someone help! Oh yeah, the best way to show you guys what i'm talking about is to show you an example. Have you ever seen a disney movie called "Jumping ship" ? (I know, i was just flipping threw the channels and nothing better was on) Matthew lawrence has awsome hair...thats the hair i'm aiming for.

...Tom. You mentioned keeping the back and sides short and just growing out the top so it would not be "shaggy" or messy. If you're going for "medium length long hair", which I assume to be around your shoulder blades, it would probably be neater, less shaggy and easier to maintain by just growing it out since the weight of one's hair holds it down once it gets longer. However, keep in mind that one's hair type also plays a major role in how manageable the hair is. For example, my hair is fairly thick and wavy. When I first grew my hair out, it looked very shaggy and unruly for about 1.5 years. But once I was out of the AS (Awkward Stage), it was much more manageable since it was weighted down. Hope that helps. Good luck, and welcome to the board.
P.S. You'll find that this board is invaluable when it comes to support, which generally does not come easy out in the world! So, visit often.

Going for an undercut, eh? Probably best to grow it out until the top hair hits the tops of your ears, as undercutting it before that might leave you looking like a bit of a...well...y'know. In any case, if you want the undercut, go for it. Just wait a while dude...

Tom. Here's how you get started. Don't cut any hair. Let it grow for about five to six months, no cuts or trims, then see a professional stylist and maybe get it evened up just a little, all around--same length that is (top, sides, back, etc.). Then, return to letting it grow. That's the only way. No miracles, no shortcuts. Josh

I reckon what you should do is to let your hair grow to the length you want it (6 to 8 inches for not so long hair I think) and get 2cm every 3 months taken off the whole length.
I'm growing my hair as long as I possibly can, so I could be wrong about the length and trim estimations.
