Waist-length hair, for most of us with straight hair, takes around 7 years to achieve.

I depends on how tall you are and what type of hair you have. If you are of average male height and have straight hair, expect waist-length in about 5 years. If you have curly hair, it probably will never happen.

Well being Sikh, you having long hair that never going to get cut,
why worry about how long it takes to get waist length.
The other thing is that since you can't trim your split ends I don't
see a problem either cause from what I understand is that you ware
a turban on your head all the time and your hair never shows in public, right.
I used to know someone who was also Sikh and was always curious how
long his hair was. :)

Is that really true? Man, if so that is the coolest religious precept ever! I'd heard of it but thought it was like an urban myth or some dumb piss take because of the turbans you guys wear. If you wouldn't mind could you tell the story behind it? It's quite peaked my interest.
On the hair question front presumably your non-white, like indian or something? Most ethnics (sorry if that sounds racist couldn't think of another term) have really nice quality hair, lovely and shiny without frizz so you may not have a problem at all. Also some people just don't get splitends (lucky bas*ards)!

It's not about growing it because you want to. You would have to keep it in a turban most of the time (at least in public). This isn't the reason why most guys here grow it long, which is to enjoy the look, feel, etc.

I'd be interested to know if the definition of trimming extends to just one hair or is it meant for a general large amount trim. Since hairs break and pull out all the time the definition seems a bit difficult to apply as an enforceable rule. Maybe it's meant as a general guideline and many men then do the occasional trim when needed and don't make a big deal about it since people won't be seeing it anyway.
Granted that some damage may be prevented by keeping it wrapped up out of the way all the time but there will still be damage over time that should be tended to one way or the other.
Is this a religion that you feel the personal need to follow or were you brought up with it?
