Should it stay or should it go?

I am now 38 years old, and I have worn my long hair (10 in past the shoulder) in a ponytail , it is still a full head of hair and not yet grey, My wife tells me I am still a kid who needs to grow up and get a haircut and a real job ( I'm a webmaster) So I decided to find a discussion group and see what "The people" have to say about it. Have at it!

Just tell her there are already more than enough adults in the world. And, as long as your web design skills help keep food on the table, she has no real room to complain.
Or was she hoping to have married... say... a Doctor?
;)
Psst - some Doctors have long hair, too.

It sounds to me it's a control issue. Two comments questions
Does he have long hair?
Or short, If she has short, This simple question will mentally confuse her. Why as a woamn can she be a professional with short hair, but you cannot be deemed or thought s a someone with a job or a job you enjoy because you have long hair. If she's that narow minded bro' i dont knoww hat to tell you.

OMG!
No offense, but I'd be proper offended. She's your bloody wife for crying out loud. She SHOULD of accepted you, your job and your hair long ago.
Have a chat with her about it. Ask her why she thinks long hair is for kids, since loads of older men have long hair.
...and don't get it cut. You'll feel like crap after.
Good luck.

Let's think about this. One the one hand a grown man wears his hair as his wants it and does work that he apparently enjoys. On the other hand a man gets a haircut because the woman in his life tells him to, and changes his job because she tells him to.
Hmmmm. Which of those sounds like a little boy to you?

There's a song that goes "Why can't you be like your brother Bob - Get a haircut and get a real job!", but I don't think it ever made it into the charts.
I'm older than you (46) and I still have long hair. My hair is going grey. My wife wants me to dye mine! She says it makes me look too old. Once you turn 30, you need never worry about looking too young again. If it makes you look younger, then that's a good argument for keeping it long!
By the time you are over 30 you should already be able to tell if you are losing your hair, so I don't think you need worry on that score.
Growing up is over-rated. Being a webmaster IS a real job, anyway. It is one of the few jobs that has been created rather than destroyed in recent years. Millions of people are out of work, and there's a lot to be said for counting your blessings.

I'm actually looking forward to having long, grey hair. Mind you, I don't relish growing old, but growing old isn't something I fear. I remember seeing Sean Connery in "Medicine Man". I couldn't stop thinking about how cool he looked with all of that grey!

Just a thought here elektros, it sounds like the grey hair comment is really about her. Does she color her hair? Perhaps it is a matter of her not wanting to show her age by being around a grey guy.
Elizabeth, who just yesterday gave in and finally admired my sweetheart's color and let him know he did not have to go white faster to please me after all :-)

She used to. Her hair changes colour between winter and summer (more red in winter, more blonde in summer), so she used to just dye it to make it one colour overall, but she hasn't lately.

She admits that. I am almost a decade older than her, though.

First of all, since when isn't 'Webmaster' a real job? (I'm a computer programmer myself and my job is very real). Secondly, you don't say how long you've been married, but I assume that your wife is used to both your hair and your job. So, if she is just saying something now, then I think that something else is going on here. I don't really want to play 'shrink' but it it seems that your wife is unhappy for some reason that she is not telling you. So, right now you have one unhappy person. If you cut your hair and change your job, without fixing what is really the problem, then you will have two unhappy people. Disaster.

I was 40 when I started my longhair journey. Do I want to grow up? Gee, I think I did already. This is something I want to do and it makes me feel younger...not like a kid, but younger and there's nothing wrong with that as far as I'm concerned. Whenever I got my hair cut before, I ended up looking like my brother who is twenty years my senior! So I grow mine because it makes me feel better about myself. If your wife really loves you, she will stand by you if that's what makes you happy. Talk to her about it but don't give in...you might just regret cutting it and it could affect your relationship down the road.
As for the job...hey, if it pays the bills and keeps your head above water it IS a real job. Some people get jealous of others who actually have fun doing their jobs.
Take care and keep on growin'
Brett

Yes, here we go again!!! Another wife trying to change her husband. First of all, long hair on a guy is NOT a measure of immaturity. It is a CHOICE, just like women have a choice of having their hair long or short like a man. Does your wife think short hair on a women a sign of immaturity? Anyway, what's so funny about this is back in the seventies, women didn't want to have men control them or their bodies. It's ironic that your wife is to trying to control you and a part of your body (hair). AND, what about the street of "equality" between the sexes? It must be a figment of the imagination of that 1970's women's movement. There wasn't any strings attached to that street of equality that I remember either (I was a teenager with long hair in the 1970's and still have it to this day!!!!I remember what was said about men during that movement, also.). If a women/girl can have her hair short or long, so can a man/boy!!! Just like the big stink the women made about wanting to join an all male golf club recently, they said that men ought to start living in the 21st century. Tell your wife to get a life and start living in the 21st century!! And as for whether a webmaster is a real job? If you are getting paid for doing it, it is a real job.

Oh don't be silly , the world needs one more stressed out adult in the world. Join the force cut your hair and be miserable and change jobs to something you hate.
After all isnt it important to think whats important to her should be important to you.................or what a concept she might think the same of you !!

Well to get the "don't touch your hair advise" this is the forum. If you have a healthy relationship with your wife and want to discuss it with her do that. Hair does not make a person,,,,,it adorns one! When you realize that life has more to offer then hair you'll find your OWN answer.
Happy Holiday's

ok firstly, if u have long hair, why wear it in a ponytail most of the time?? (not that it is relavent, for some reason ponytails irrate me when people have long hair but ALWAYS wear a ponytail!)
I belive if hair is well kept and nice then it will look good and thus make the person look good:) The long hair will "suit" them:) At 38, maybe the hair is worn out, or needs a trim or is a frizz monster, these things can happen as people get older.
If it is just a hair length issue then, um, i dunno, since u are a webmaster the ponytailed computer guy look is kinda cheesy, maybe that is irratating her?

Maybe because when you look from the front it creates the illusion of "short" hair. I was wondering about the same point before and maybe thats the reason.

Keep the hair, ditch the wife!! HA!
Your long hair will attract lots of good looking women who will appreciate you for who you are.......and should YOU choose to change profession, long hair is accepted in all sorts of fields without bias.
And long, gray, white or peppered hair is quite fashionable now on we older folks……
Good Luck

I think you are happy with a full head of hair, so I would suggest show it proudly instead of reducing your hair to a short style that gives nothing from the beauty power of hair.
I started growing my hair out from very short at age 46 and now 4 years later I do not want to miss it, until now it never questioned my job.
Maybe my bosses tolerate it because they dislike their partly bald heads.

I assume that your wife, like most women, has long hair. Tell her to cut HER hair short so that she may 'grow up' as well.
