looking for some advice

hey, I was wondering if anyone knew how to get hair to look like the guy who's standing at the front of the pictures hair?
its a bit hard to see here (I couldnt find a better picture, sorry) but his hair at the front, and sort of all through his part, seems to go up slightly before falling down?
I have hair of a similar thickness, length, and waviness as his, but when I part my hair, it tends to lay flatter near the roots. Does anyone know how to achieve that small lift around the part and especially at the front (giving him a nice clean hairline) before the hair naturally flows down?
Thanks for any help, and a happy new year to everyone.

Looks to me like he may have a natural cowlick at the hairline which causes that effect. You can make your hair do that by pulling it back tightly most or all of the time for a year or so. The roots will re-align themselves and point toward the back of your head. This can be hard on the hair however, and if you pull too tightly and for too long, it can cause hair loss. So I don't think that I would reccommend that.

Try combing your hair straight back while damp/wet and letting it part naturally. Where the part meets yoour hairline in the front insert your finger (spread open) at the scalp. Close the fingers, lift slightly and then open fingers and slide them forward out of the hair. (Hope you are getting the picture--this is so much easier to demonstrate than describe!!).

Thanks a lot for the advice, brgallagher and sorted... But do these techniques work without any gel or anything?

Yes...and maybe not. It depends upon the thickness of hair growth and natural body of your hair. The more you have of either of these the better your results without gel or anything. Otherwise, a LIGHT coating of gel on the fingers (no need for a great amount of product put in the hair) will help--and, when hair dries, leaves no apparent use of product on hair.

Mostly yeah, depends on your hair - I never used gel... except when I started growing out, it helped me go a few more weeks between trims.

Getting a bit of lift from a part was something I struggled with when I was kid, but I gotit pretty much mastered about the time I wanted a flatter look.. (Doh!)
First use a brush or comb with longer teeth, its much more difficult with a thin comb as they tend to reduce volume.
Brush your hair back whilst damp, then comb it down flatish at each side gradually working up to the top of your head and towards the part.
Stop about an inch either side of the part then with your brush flick the remaining hair down to the sides. Then just grab either side of your head, and lift the now parted hair back up*. This helps give you the lift you need. Then just let it fry naturally.
* If your confused by this bit, just imagine how Frankenstein's Monster would lift off the top of his head... (I know... RBGallagher is right, this is so much easier to demonstrate than describe.)
