2 Weeks start today...

Well, sinde I've had flu for a week my hair's been looking worse and worse. It looks dead, it's getting full of dreads and knots and I just don't love it anymore...Thing is I have one of those personalities that makes me shudder everytime I lose any hair length and I really wanted to have it all down to my shoulders. Mind you, thanks to my racial heritage, I don't think it'll ever happen. My head's too big and my hair's too curly and dense. Even if I undercut it I know it'll look crap until I can tie it, and then what's the point of having it tied all the time? It' a shame as I've been growing for 15 months now and I've enjoyed it up until this point when it's all suddenly gone wrong.
Thing is though, my hair's a part of my identity and it breaks my heart to imagine cutting it...but I know it'll be for the best. Anyhow, 2 weeks from here...

That was good thinking, envoking the two week rule. I'll bet that you will feel better about your hair just as soon as you are up and about and feeling better in general. Then you will be really glad that you waited and did not cut.

After checking out my website (www.brgallagher.com) you are welcome to contact me directly via email if you think there is some professional assistance I could give you (at no cost to you)with your hair in its current condition. Reading your entire post as well as "between the lines", I am sure that cutting your hair is not a solution--just the beginning of a whole new set of problems/regrets. Stick with that "2 weeks"...at the least!

I got to enjoy the holidays with the flu. It's currently still lingering.
Spend a day with your hair if at all possible. Get all the knots out during this time and give it a good deep conditioning. It will look much better.
I spent the whole day in bed the day after christmas. My hair was a giant ball of knots. I had my son bring me my brush and comb and laid in bed removing the tangles for at least an hour.
I made it out of bed to check emails and various boards yesterday, and detangled while checking them. I'm doing exactly that right now also. After I'm finished I'll be back in bed.
I've opted to not wash my hair during this time, but just rinse with water while in the shower. I'm hoping the natural oils will protect it from damage while I'm sick in bed.
Your hair will get better.

Your hair will get better if you let it grow. Will it look *fabulous* when it gets to shoulder length? There is only one way to know for sure. The road to becomming a long hair is a toll road. The price is the awkward stage. For some of us it was a breeze. For others, such as yourself, it is a nightmare. Only you know if the price is worth it to you. How strong is your desire for long hair? How much hassle are you willing to bear? My long hair adds about ten minutes per day to my grooming ritual (mostly careful detangling). It also make showering less convient. But overall these inconviences are no match for my desire to wear my hair long. I hope you come to a decision that pleases you. Let me leave you with a bit of Robert Frost, from The Road Not Taken:

Curly hair, at 15 months (that was my mark on the first). I feel your pain. Big head does not go well with curls UNTIL they get real long, then trust me they look awesome!!! I was just at a missions conference in Illinois and I met this guy about the same as us, curly hair, rather big frame etc. . . .except he had been growing for over 3 1/2 years. It looked great and helped to inspire me.
Dang, I should have gotten a photo to share with the board. Hindsight is always 20/20 eh?
Hang in there man, because of the extra hassle and extremely long akward stage, it will make it all the more dear to us once it is "really" long. . .
