Is this normal?

I've spent a lot of time looking through information and pic here on this excellent website and related links. But there doesn't seem to be too much on these two areas:
1. Hair appearing thinner on top. I'm 30, so I suppose it's quite possible that my hair is thinning. Since I've had a shaved head or very short haircut for the last eight years or so, I've not been able to see if it's thinning or if it's just my immagination. I'm now six months into letting my hair grow out, and when looking straight at the top of my head, the hair looks thin & I can definatley see my scalp. I was hoping that as my hair grew longer this wouldn't be visible, but it looks like my hair is growing out long and thin, leaving my scalp partly visible. The hair on the sides and back of my head appear much thicker and no skin is visible.
2. Does hair at the back and sides grow slower than on the top? Maybe it's just due to the last haircut I had, but I thought my hair was more or less the same length throughout. Now, after six months, the hair on the top is over three inches long and only a bit over one inch at the back. Also, it seems my hair is growing much slower than the average. Considering what I started with, I would have thought that after half a year I'd have longer hair. (On a sidenote, maybe it's time to look for some hair vitamins or biotin, etc.)

Sounds to me like you may be experiencing the early stages of male pattern baldness. See your doctor and get a prescription for Propecia, or even Avodart if you can get it. These are miracle drugs in the prevention of MPB. Oh, yeah it was also recently shown that long term use of Propecia may cut your risk of prostrate cancer by as much as 60%!

Thanks for the link. I took a look, I guess I should see a doctor first. I don't have a doctor, never really use one to tell you the truth. If needed, I usually just go to a walk-in clinic.
I was hoping not to have to need any drug, but I'd sure hate for this to ruin my chances of growing a great head of hair now that I've finally decided to grow it out. I've just purchased some products from GNC that help to nourish hair, but I don't think they'll do much for actual hair loss, for that I'd need something more.
