Whats up hyperboard ?
Im new to this board, so bare with me. i have been reading this site for a month or so, i think its pretty cool to have a site dedicated to "great hair". my whole life i wanted long hair but never grew it out, due to many reasons. when i would finally grow it out, i guess i would get "scared" and get it trimmed. my past hair styles consisted of complete shaved to crew cuts. longest i ever had on top was an inch or so. so what i ask of you, does anyone have any advice for a guy like me growing my hair out from the "bald to the bueatiful" ? should i get trims ? what types of shampoo/conditioner ? how do i avoid frizziness ? comb or brush ? how long will it take ?
please help a guy out with a simple dream.
thanks....
Dave
p.s. my hiar was last shaved on at the beg. of nov. and its only now a inch or so long :(

Growing your hair long is a long term committment. When you begin your journey to growing your hair long it is best not to trim it at all. Your hair grows about 1/2 inch per month based on the information you gave. With no trims at all your hair should be about 7 inches long by January 2005 and well into the awkward stage. During this stage your hair may be a bit difficult to manage. Try to be patient through this stage. Trims lengthen the awkward stage. By 2006 your hair should be about 13 inches long and you should be able to tie it into a ponytail. Once you can tie it into a ponytail it becomes a lot easier to take care of. It is best to use a salon quality shampoo to get best results. It costs more but well worth it. Use a high quality conditioner as well, it will reduce frizz. My opinion is that a comb is less damaging to your hair than a brush. To remove tangles from your hair start at the ends and work your way up. I hope you find this information useful Absalom

Right you'll get a lot of different oppions on this, but here's mine:
1) Trim Every 2-3 months for the first 9 months. Keep this pretty much strict back n sides. Then every 3-4 months for the next 9 months again avoiding taking much off the length. By maintaining some intermediate styles, you are more likely not to give up on growing your hair out.
2) Buy a decent shampoo & conditioner forget 2 in 1s... and avoid high street brands. Scan the posts on the board you'll find plenty of suggestions.
3) Avoid combing your hair when wet and as you hair gets longer use a longer & wider toothed comb, to avoid breakage. Sooner or later you'll get tangles, use your fingers to unknot, dont tear thru it with a comb. Never use a hair brush on wet hair.
4) For most people growing your hair will take about 2 years. That'll give you about 12 inches (30 cm) which will be shoulder length +/- generall the starting point for what is termed "long hair".
Hope that helps.

Actually, straight hair should only be brushed or combed when it is dry. Curly hair however, should only be brushed or combed when it is WET!
I stand corrected
