Spring is in the hair

Hello again board,
I see that a lot of posts here are about probs with thick/ hard-to-manage hair. Well, ditto, but I have another question - do any of you have hair that really springs up? My hair comes to shoulder length but if I pull it down straight, it comes down to mid chest. My bangs sit at just below the ears but pulled down they come to nearly the shoulders.
Now, my hair isn't curly - I'd say slightly wavy - but extremely thick and sticks out all over the place (I think it grows horizontally...lol). I always have to tie it back AND gel it, though I'd really love to wear it loose. Straightening irons don't work either. So, (deep breath) does still being in the Awkward Stage with shoulder length hair make me one of those unlucky guys who just aren't meant to have long hair?
Thanks in advance.
Armin

No way, it just means a longer than usual awkward stage. Be patient and gravity will eventually have its way with your hair, making it more manageable. There is no way it will grow horizontally once it gets really long, like mid back length or longer. Also be very careful with straightening irons because they damage your hair. Absalom
how bad can straightening irons do?

I baught a straingtening iron for $10.00 and it works really weel too if I just take my time. But the problem is that i have stacticy/damaged/wavy/frizzy/curly hair it becomes frizzy in seconds but when I use the straightening iron it fixes all that but my hair still remains stacticy but the thing i need to ask is that will the straingtening still damage your hair even if u use it once a week i only straighten my hair on sundays and sleep in a ponytail on the side so it doesnt get messed up but people say ur hair can get damaged by using the straightening iron everyday but i only use it once a week will it still damage my hair?????
sincerely,
Confused Girl

...anyone is "meant" to not have long hair. It's just that curly thick hair is hardest to manage during the awkward stage. The good news is that thick curly hair looks great once past the awkward stage. Hang in there and be patient (I know, easier said than done) and you'll get there.
BTW, it's not uncommon to use gel with a tail.
:)
