Poll: For those with beards...

If you had to, would you rather part with your long hair or your beard? I ask this because most of you are really PASSIONATE about your long hair (and rightly so) but who feels the same about their beard? In some cultures, a man would rather DIE than be made to shave his beard/ moustache. That isn't usually so in western countries but I just wondered. Me personally, I'd rather lose the hair on my head (though I wouldn't be too happy about it) but this beard will never come off!!
Cheers, Armin

I would rather lose my beard than my hair any day. My hair is over 3 feet long and Ilove every inch of it. Absalom

I have to agree with the majority here. I have a full beard (I started to grow on when my hair got to the awkard stage (still is at times!)) but I keep it short. When I can feel it on my lips, the shaver comes out and the beard goes back to a number 1, so taking it back to clean shaven wouldn't be to much different. The only drawback is that I would start looking a bit of a girlie, as apart from my square chin (the reason I decided to grow the beard is that I had problems wet shavings the right angles in it!) I have a face which is slightly femine.
I found that I got more complants about my hair Why is it that some women hate long hair on men, and they have usually got long hair themselves?

Facial hair. It grows back much quicker.

The beard would go first for me, but that's because my beard's only about 1.5" long, so it wouldn't take long to grow back in...

The beard would be back after two months, the hair would take over two years...

Neither one. Nevah evah!!!!!!!! Nnnnnnnnoooooooo!!!!!!!!! But seriously....
That's a tough one. I'd rather not loose either one (although my hair isn't that long yet, but I've waited so many years to finally grow it, I don't think I'd want to loose it now, whether at this stage or when it's at the desired length).
As for facial hair, I've endured a lot of criticism for it, especially when I was younger (like late teens, sideburns at 17, goatee at 19). I only once gave into my boss when I was 20 to shave my goatee and I immeditatley regretted it and grew it back. Never been without facial hair since. I've endured less criticsim now, excpet for last year when I grew a full beard. Some people said they didn't like it on me, meaning they either wanted to see me clean shaven or with a goatee again.
One of the reasons I finally decided to grow my hair long is becuase I want to do so while I still have some! I think it's thinning out, so I figured it's either now or never. Facial hair has been a part of my life for over a decade, and I'm quite attached to it (literally!) but at least it will always be there and grow back. So maybe if it were a choice (and it would have to be a matter of life and death), I'd rather loose the facial hair.
Definately the beard...

The only real reson I wear a beard is because I detest shaving. I'd hold onto my moustache a little longer (same reason), but the hair? Never - unless it was a matter of survival - then I'd regrow ASAP. Same thing about neckties - I'll never again wear one unless its a matter of survival!

It sounds heretical in this context here - but I rather would give up my long hair (currently about 50 cms) than my beard (10 cms)!
Yes, western Europe (and especially Germany) is generally tolerant towards long hair, but somewhat hostile when it comes to beards longer than one inch - they tend to be associated either with homeless men or Islamic fundamentalists. Back in the late 70s/early 80s there was a period when longer beards were in fashion among the progressive/alternative set, but later it dwindled away.
But as far as I'm concerned: I don't like my face hairless, last summer, I tried going with moustache only, but it looked ridiculous, my face is just too wide, perhaps also because of my overweight.
But I don't think I would have to make that choice in the nearer future...
See you in Khyberspace!

I guess I'd rather lose the beard then long hair. The beard seems less important, there are probably fewer hairs in the beard than in the head hair, the beard can grow back quickly (as others here have said) and maybe I could just shave the sideburns and call the remaining beard a giant goatee.

Hmm, I think my first reaction would be to sucker punch who ever was trying to take one from me.
But when it comes right down to it, the hair's NEVER leaving. The beard I feel the same about, but it's not taken that long to grow in (about 3 years, 7" or so). I've had longer hair since 7th grade, though (I'm a college sophomore now) and it's almost 3 feet. Plus, the hair gets the compliments, the beard gets weird stares!
In reality, though, they're both staying if I have anything to say about it.

I would choose to shave off my beard. It would grow back a lot quicker than my hair anyway. I'd have a hard time remembering to shave, though! I would never cut off my hair.
