I don't know what layering is. I discovered that my hair is naturally dark and wavy. I have been wearing a hat to ride out the awkward phase (I'm at the one year point)and yes, wavy hair tends to stick out in crazy directions until it's long enough. Just do the hat thing. My hair is getting long enough for me to tell that it is *wow* absolutely beautiful. My hair naturally looks like expensively-done hair on hair coloring packages - just wonderful. I couldn't be more pleased. You will be too. Use conditioner regularly. :-)

Layering your hair,if it is as thick and wavy as you describe, will not correct the "wings" in fact it will cause them to appear in more lose looking curl. In school I had a layered cut all around much like the "Farrah Fawcet" look on the sides. Some might describe a layerd cut also as a Shag or a Gypsy cut. If you pick up a hair Style book at a book store you might have a better idea what the rusult would look like or ask your stylist.

I'd definite recommend against layering. When you say you want hair all one length, I think what you really mean is that you want all your hair to reach to your shoulders. Hair at the top of your head would be longer, and hair at the bottom of your head shorter, in order for it all to reach to your shoulders. That's what you need to make a ponytail with all the hair in it. With layering, the hair is cut so that all your hairs are close to the same length, ending in layers going from the top of your head down. Hair at the top of your head might only reach to the middle of your head. The only hair that would reach to the bottom of your current length would be hair near the bottom of your head. I agree that layering will only make wings or any natural curl in your hair worse. And it's absolutely the worst thing to do if you're planning on having a ponytail at times.

Do NOT layer. You'll regret it for many months after.
I did.

Layering won't help the curl or the flip at the sides, infact it'll make it worse. I certainly wouldn't say you should layer your hair unless you plan on growing to shoulder blades or mid back, and then you should make sure that your top layers are still long enough to reach a ponytail.
But layering can make long hair more interesting. Just as long as they are long layers!

I suppose it is too late, judging by your second post, but here goes anyway.
I used to have a layered hairstyle when it was fashionable. That's your first problem. Frankly blunt cuts are in for men's long hair, and layering is out, along with mullets (which are quite a different thing again), but let's not go there. However, I would be the last to suggest that you have to follow fashion. Just don't let someone else choose for you, though.
The second problem is that layered hair is harder to manage (and I am speaking from experience). Almost any problem you have with wavy hair (my type) will be worse with layering. I have some really great old photos of myself with layered hair. The trouble is, as the person in the photos, I know that I combed my hair immediately before, and that 5 minutes later it was all over the place! Growing it out and having a blunt cut made most of my hair problems go away.

You never know it might work for you... It depends on the length of your hair and your hair type
I have layers at the moment, (a result of growing out) but I haven't reached the point where my hair is long enough to be cut to one length. Your post implied that your hair was already one length, so to most of us layering seems like a backward step.
The important thing is... do you like it layered?
