any advice for a messy haired bloke?

Yep, i'm new. Hello. Erm... basically.... i want to grow my hair long. Longer than i ever did. The reasoning being that er...a girl i really like says it would look great on me. Plus i always wanted to grow it and see what would happen.
The difficulty is, mine is naturally very curly, and tends to turn into an obscene bird's nest, causing me to bottle out and get it cut, rather than gelling it for the months it actually takes to get longer than this. Any advice on how to make it a little less er....fuzzy? My sister recommends straightening devices. But they look like some kind of mace like weapon. I'm scared. A scared little bod.
Thankyou and again, hello there.

Hey man, give it a try. My hair's wavy-curly but with the added length (about five inches now) it pulls itself fairly straight. I also use products made by Matrix that help to smooth the hair and make it straighter. My advice to you is to take the time to drop into a regular hair salon and ask to speak with one of the stylists, preferably a woman. They deal with this all the time and since most men don't have longer hair, I don't know, it just seems logical to ask a woman stylist. But they can help you with products and procedures to keep your hair looking less like a birds nest and more like the cool hair you want. They've sure helped me, man. And they can help you too. Good luck (with the new girl and with the hair). Josh

Thanks for the help, Josh.
The girl is the most difficult part, actually. :)
