question regarding hair oil

Hi all,
I have different stuff regarding hair oil. I have two questions:
1. Is it good for hair to apply oil (like coconut derivatives or other herbal stuff)?
2. If the answer to the above question is "yes", then what is the best way to do it? There are two possibilities:
(2-a) Apply oil before shampooing, let iet get absorbed into the scalp (perhaps overnight) and then shampoo the next day.
(2-b) Apply oil after shampooing. The benefit is that it gives it a really nice sheen and eliminates the dry appearance one gets after shampooing. The disadvantage is that it might attract dirt and pollution and make it stick to the hair till it is shampooed next.
Any advice would be most welcome.
Thanks in advance.

I use jojoba oil to moisturize my hair (I got mine at a health food store in the skin care section). I apply it to the ends of my hair usually in the evening. I put a few drops in my palms, rub them together to spread the oil, then rub my hands across and through the ends of my hair. A little goes a long way. I have found that using too much oil makes my hair greasy. If I didn't use a leave-in conditioner I might use the oil during the day too. If you scalp is too dry you could also rub a few drops of oil near your scalp but before you do that I suggest you try cutting back on shampooing and/or try a milder shampoo. I only shampoo every 3-4 days. On days I don't shampoo I either just use conditioner or wear a shower cap and don't wet my hair.
