Im at 4.5 to 5 inches now and this stage is so tough for me, especially because i have a really thick head of hair! I just want it to fall down and seperate, but it just all sticks together and won't do what i want it to unless i empty a bottle of gel! Ahh, when does it get better?, and what was the toughest length for you all?

It get's MUCH BETTER when you can tie it all back. That happens for most people at around 9 inches or so. If you're at 5 now, then you have 4 to go. Or about 8 months. You may find, however, that you will be able to tie a half tail sooner than that. This will control the hair around your face, which is the most problematic anyway. You may just be able to do that now, give it a try!

What is a half tail, and how does it work?

Take the hair from the top half of your head only and pull it back into a tail. Leave the hair that is lower than the tops of your ears down.

I think by 6" one feels like throwing their hands up in the air in frustration. That was about the worst for me. But to cut it at that point would be a great mistake for in about 3/4 of a year you will be able to get very much into a tail. Hairs that at that point are not quite long enough can always be pinned (barely noticable) until they finally fit into the Tail. Hold on...........I doubt you will regret it.

When I was at the same stage as you about a month and a half ago I took the plunge and gave myself an undercut! I know many people here are against them and I wont tell you to do one as ultimatly its your choice and you have to be happy with it.
I used clippers and undercut my hair to a number 5. Admittedly it looks a bit strange on the back where the hairline goes lower than the sides and hence there is a short bit sticking out from the lower hair (but that is pretty much unnoticable now and I dont have to look at the back of my head). However the top hair which is left long now hangs much tidier and straighter and I am much happier with the fact that I use a lot less gel and It seems to do something closer to what I want it to do.
I am now regrowing the back and sides as by april they should be about 3 - 3 1/2 inches which will mesh nicely with the hair on the top which will be about 7 - 8 inches by then.
My hair is very very thick and has slight waves in, which seem to be decreasing with weight. so for the most part I am happy with my decision, though I do miss the longer hair on the back as that used to meet my shirt collar and kept me warm... but then it was either have that and struggle for a few months or make things easier when I was considering cutting it all.

I also try never to wear a hat as I find that for a couple of days after wearing a baseball cap my hair retains the flip it forms at the base of the hat even after shampooing and conditioning... so my hair is actually more manageable when I dont wear a hat

I to have thick hair. Mine also clumped together at this stage. I found that when it got to 6 inches it was a bit more barable, because it could start to be put behind my ears.
