i was just wandering why i should cut my splitends, my hair doesn't seem to bother me that much so i haven't had a cut or a trim of any kind in 1.5 years and thats when i started to grow my hair. are there any things that splitends can do to your hair apart from make it LOOK unhealthy
if they bother you

My hair reaches just past the middle of my back and I don't let the split ends I have bother me.
Some people will tell you that splits, once they've naturally broken off, will form an end more resistant to future splits; others will claim that splits systematically destroy the entire length of the hair they afflict.
I don't believe that standard splits do anything more than annoy those who desire perfect hair. However, an abundance of side splits or splits that form in the centre of a strand of hair may serve as a warning to review your haircare routine.

I have split ends all my life long and I have hair to the waist, I don't have that many spit ends that my hair looks not healthy but they do nothing to my hair and I don't cut them off. I don't belive spit ends will destroy the entire length of the hair. So my advice is, don't worry about them unless you see them from a distance and none will look that closely that someone sees it.
cool testimony

That's very good to hear from somebody with waist-length hair - thanks for the encouragement!

Hello Scottie,
Split ends may make hair care more difficult as they add up and create some tangle issues. There also will be length continually lost to broken off hairs but these will likely have minimal impact. Growing for a year and a half, your hair is pretty young yet and the few splits should not be a problem though. Coming from one with long, semi-fine, really old hair splits are inevitable and can be lived with. It may be different for your hair type but you might as well continue without trims and see how it goes for you over time.

So they don't continue all the way...

Do you ever read any forums for women with long hair? Even the ones who prefer "uncut" ends still do a "search and destroy" for split-ends. If you cut the split-end off, the split will continue all the way up the hair shaft, thus you end up losing that hair. Do you really want to lose hair?
Cut your splits. Your hair will thank you !!!
I wanted to type....

I don't believe that hair splits in this fashion. A typical fork split at the tip of a hair is unlikely to travel any further than one centimetre up the shaft - this halt is usually caused by one half of the fork breaking off.
About those women you mention...

Mick, I refer you to the Long Hair Community thread linked below to let you know there are women with gorgeous hair out there that do no "search and destroy missions" whatsoever to no ill effect on their hair.
The people who choose to cut off split ends individually are going for appearance and managability. For my own experience I can say 14 years of never even dusting resulted in no visible half-hairs. In all my reading and in person I have never encountered a person with splits making their way to their scalp. In the absence of a credible reference to infinitely travelling split ends, "dusting" the splits off is completely optional and not everyone choses to do so.
