How to start...

I'd love to start growing my hair out. I think it'd be great to have longer hair... But I'm hesitant to do so. Right now, my hair is pretty much even all around and is starting to look a little odd. What i want to know is... Do you have to grow all your hair out evenly? Or can you trim the sides and back, and let the hair grow out over it? I'm not sure if I'm explaining it very well, but I'd love it if I could just keep the sideburns and back of my neck well maintained and have the longer hair growing over it to cover it all up.

let the top of your hair grow, then trim the sides and back occasionally every 3-4 months, trim the ends of the back and sides only, about .5 inches.
what you said is exactly right. or you can grow it all out if u dont have a problem with your hair bothering you.
i have 1 inch hair all around so far and i am growing it too.

I'm at about 3 to 3 n half inches all around now varying..last cut was somewhere like a week before thanksgiving started at like less then 1. My hair grows relitivly faster then most ppls though. >.<; I'm going to post pics sometime next month. Only get the trims if you REALLY REALLY need something to keep you going..all it does it make the process longer though :\.

What you are describing is called an "undercut" and does not work well for long hair. Keeping the sides buzzed (or trimmed short) with long hair on top is costly to maintain due to frequent trips to the hair stylist to get the sides trimmed or buzzed. Trying to maintain it yourself is difficult. It is difficult not to cut into the long hair adjacent to the side area you are trying to buzz. One slip and you lose a piece of the long hair on top which if 12 inches long would take about 2 years to grow back. In a nutshell undercuts are fine for shorter hairstyles (3 or 4 inches on top) but not for long hair. Most of the members on this board who have tried undercuts have regretted it. Most of us will advise against it, and I definitely do. So I would strongly recommend growing all of your hair long, it is just a whole lot easier to maintain and you will be happier with it in the long run. Absalom

Absolutely no reason at all to remove the Sideburns. As for "how" to grow your hair long? Very easy. NO HAIRCUTS for a long long long time.
(I would say give yourself at least 2 years depending on the length you wish to acquire.)
I have read on this Hyperboard so often of the guys who desire to grow-out their hair starting at one length. Looks like you are in the drivers seat. Go for it. Let it grow! Good Luck. :-)

Yeah - you can do it this way, no biggie. There are no rules on how to grow your hair out.
Just use decent shampoo & conditioner and get a wide tool comb and don't trash your way thru knots that'll develop as your hair gets longer.
