I have curly hair too, down to my waist. If i'm not careful it just ends up looking like a huge frizz bomb. So, here's what I do;
After washing and conditioning I just squeeze most of the water out. Then I spray in some Infusium 23 leave in conditioner. Then I brush it all through, starting at the ends of course and working my way up. Then I bend forward and brush it all "upside down". This really gets all of the knots out. Then while still in this position, I work in a generous amount of alcohol free gel. Then I brush that all through. This will really solve a lot of control issues after it has dried. Then I stand back up and brush it all back and down my back. Finally, I braid it (but without using a schunchie to tie it first). Just separate the hair into three sections and start braiding from the nape of your neck. If your hair is long enough, after you have braided eight inches or so, you can pull the braid in front of your shoulder to continue and finish it (You will kind of have to do it backwards at this point).
I will usually keep the braid in for one or two days as it controls my hair perfectly. After that, when I take the braid out my hair is nice and wavey without any unruly curl or frizz and I can style it however I want.
Hope this helps.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot. The gel trick also works really well for hair that is not yet long enough to be braided. And NEVER brush curly hair when it is dry. Only brush it when it's wet.

I do very little but DO (using my hands) sqeeze residue water out. Then I use a towel, but only to lightly "dab" at it. Otherwise it takes about an hour to dry just letting the air get to it.
