How Long is acceptable?
Posted by Sorted on January 31, 2004 at 08:48:55: Previous Next
I saw a re-run of a "for-a-laugh" Chat Show on cable the other night and obviously they were struggling for guests cos he was Talking to David Seaman's Hair Stylist. [David Seaman is the recently retired England Goalkeeper famous for his ponytail, moustache and goal-mouth bloopers.)
They basically were gently mocking David's Long Hair and his stylist was kinda defending it saying its OK to have long hair provided its not too long. When asked how long he indicated that between the shoulders and shoulder blades was the longest acceptable "stylish" length for a guy to wear his hair.
Curiously a recent poll of women on the board revealed they prefered guys with long hair to wear it to a similiar length. "Shoulder Blade length" was the most popular choice of all those that replied.
I guess the questions are: How long is acceptable by society at large? Is there a line a which it stops being considered stylish, (if of course anyone will consider it stylish at all?)
Most models or celebs with long hair seem to wear it about shoulder length, is this because this is an acceptable or stylish length or is it just because they are so "in" with changing fashions they don't have the time to grow it out any longer?
Is there a point a guy can cross, does it matter? Thoughts opinions?

Of course it dosen't matter. If you want hair past your shoulder-blades, then grow it. Don't let the media instruct you in any other way.

Its not just the media though is it? The Poll on this board highlighted the preferences of free thinking people and they came to a similiar conclusion.

As I recall, the sample (6 women in a world of 5 billion women) also prefered straight hair. A lot of women, not necessarily referring to longer styles, prefer curly hair on guys. As Nyghtfall pointed out before, it's just coincidence and you cannot let 6 women represent female society, or even that comprised of women who like long-haired men.
Sorted, I know that you do not reside in a large country, but I shall use America in my example (since I live there). I am gussing, but let's say that there are 50 million women in the USA between 18 and 50. If 2% of the population likes long hair on a man, that is 1 million women. Now take that one million women and cut it by 90%. This is to account for married/taken women, women with strong differences than you (religion, politics, etc.), and all of the women that you just wouldn't be compatable with for any given reason(s).
This leaves you with slightly over 100,000 women. That could fill the largest sporting area in the country to its capacity. I'm sure you've seen a college football championship game on tevevision at some point. That's a lot of people! Those are all women who would love to give you a chance.

Hi!
Of course, people are free to have their hair as long or short as they like. But we can still have peronal opinions on hair length on purely aesthetic grounds, so here's mine! For long hair on men, something a bit below shoulder blade level represents an aesthetic limit, an adequate long hair statement, if you like. Anything longer, to me, is superflous. For women I'd draw the aesthetic hair limit about waist level - again, anything longer adds nothing, for me at least. I think perhaps ultra-long hair, especially when worn loose, gives the illusion of people looking shorter than they are.
Cheers,Barry

Interesting point... but why does the aethetic limit between men and women? Is this something to do with the styles that can be applied to hair of a particular length?

Redleader - I'm not saying the sample was wholly representive of society at large... most women hate long hair on guys period. Plus I'm a former stats student so I know a sample of 6 is hardly representative.
Though if you ask around and look around at society, culture and media at large, you'll get a feel for this. And the feel I'm getting is that its OK for a guy to have longhair, provided its not too long.
But please don't patronise me with this "Large Country" Mumbo, I come from Britain that's a country of 60 Million People, and I live on a island with a higher population density than most cities in the US - I know all about people and I'm not worried about finding someone who I'm compatible with. But That wasn't my point.
My Point was society (as always) seems to be pushing a particular image of acceptability. This might be driven by the media but its already infected the population.

This may be true, but the great thing about living in the free world is that we don't have to restrict our behavior and/or appearance to succeed. Sure, it's tougher in some fields than others being in a physical minority - but that's just a good test of character. If you want waist-length hair, grow it. Who cares is a few narrow-minded people don't acccept you?

Well evidently most of the population... The vast majority of people in this world follow some form of trend or fashion.
OK your not going to be led by the masses but your in a minority! Most people want to be accepted by their peers...

Varies from 1/4" on up. Depends on how up tight your
location is.
I hae waist length hair, i know people who think 1/4" long is too
long.
What is right for you? That is up to you, what ever floats your
boat.

Other people's opinions about what I should do with my own body are not acceptable to me.
"Acceptable" then becomes a useless term that is used to tell you what limits the person saying the word places upon themself.

What is ok to you is "all" that matters.
everybody should do as they wish - wear long hair, shave it, etc... I like a few tattoos on the body - I have seen some guys where no skin is shown - I would never do that, but if that is what they want - beautiful.
Just do as you please - keep yourself happy, and not worry about others. You will always have people that like/dislike anything. My wife likes my long hair - I dated alot of women that like long hair, and some did not - I'm not with them....

I'll answer that with my own question: Who the @#$% cares, and, more imporantly, why do you?

Hell no!

Yeah, here's one:
Waist length, and proud of it, baby!

Not sure I care so much, more that I'm interested in why this seems to be the case.

1.) This question is so difficult to answer because "Society Views" are all over the place.
2.) Heavens only knows as styles come and go all the time.
: Is there a point a guy can cross, does it matter? Thoughts opinions?
I doubt there is a point a guy can cross because it is up to the individual and what HE desires. Henceforth it matters not.

I suspect that for 'conventional' people who are too polite to say that they don't like lomg hsir on men the 'acceptable' length is the shortest that can be considered long. Shoulder length hair is also the easiest to keep tidy, so that might be a consideration for some.
We need to conduct some polls amongst the general public to see what they really think. I agree with many on this board that on a personal level I don't care what anybdy thinks, but I also agree that it is interesting to examine the question.
