On Being a Longhair - In French!
Posted by Bill on February 04, 2004 at 17:15:22: Previous Next
A French guy thought our FAQ "On Being a Longhair" was awesome enough to translate it into French! It is a long document, and this was a lot of work for him. Hell, it was a lot of work for me to type it up.
Despite my surname (my great great great grandfather lived in Illinois when it belonged to France), I don't know any French. There is some likelihood that the guy misunderstood the original English in some places, or that I mistyped his translation in some places. But the way I feel about it is that the work will nevertheless be more meaningful to French-speaking people than reading the English version would be, so I put it on line.
Thanks to Guillaume, a 19 year old guy in Nancy, France, for doing this translation. As I said, it was a LOT of work. It's a great resource to add to those we have for longhaired men.
Any of you who are fluent in French, please go take a look at it! And if anyone sees any glaring errors in grammar or translation, by all means let me know.
Thanks! And enjoy!

I live in Taylorville, Illinois myself. Mt. Vernon is about an hour south of here. I have been through there many times. I take trips to North Carolina every year to see my mother and go through Mt. Vernon via 57 south. I believe I may have delivered furniture there in the past. I work for Jensen Home Furnishings here in Taylorville. Thought I would share our geographical closeness. Peace!

As long as we're talking about Southern Illinois, I might as well add that I go to school here in Carbondale! Sounds like for such a wide based message board some of us are a little closer than we think!
LOL!

Oh my god, this is too freakin' weird...
I go to college at Rend Lake, like less than an hour from SIU. :D It must be some sort of trend to levitate here to this board if you live in Southern Illinois...

You can tell a REAL Southern Illinois boy because he will capitalize the "S", even though that's grammatically wrong. I see capital S's all over the place here. :-)

In the 70s, there were LOTS of longhairs in Carbondale. That was one of the best reasons to go over there. :-) I had lots of longhair friends over there, but they're surely all gone now. Most were students and the town was really transient.

Well I'm for sure enjoying myself down here, and there are definitely a lot of long hairs here still. I see them everywhere I go, haha there's even one guy with long blond hair that looks like He-Man! It's a pretty diverse place, which is nice.
By the way, to all you Southern Illinois boys, any of you ever gone camping around here? There's some great spots...
Whoa! Weird!

I'm a junior at Mt. Vernon Highschool.
I don't really remember seeing you around but I probally did.
I might go to RendLake College too. I'd rather go to a University but probably can't afford it.
Anyone else notice how when someone asks us what state we live in we always say Souther Illinois, instead of just Illinois? It should be its own state like West Virginia.

Haha, seriously, I come from northern Illinois and Southern is like a whole different state! It should definitely be on it's own boundaries.

You bet. We always called it Mount Vernonelinoy, so people wouldn't think you meant Mount Vernon Indiana which was closer. I grew up in Eldorado. I worked two summers up your way as a DJ at WMCL, which was half way up the hard road to where you're at.
See, we sure don't talk French no more. :-)
Treyn lives way up north in the eyes of a Southern Illinois boy.
Isn't Evil Milkman also from your town?
I moved out here to San Francisco in the 70s, and shortly after I got here, a client said I looked and talked like I was from the Ozarks. No point in denyin' it. Here most people think I'm a hippie, but I reckon I'm really just a hick. :-)

Hey This is weird!
I grew up in Robinson Illinois, which is an hour from Terre Haute, IN.
I went to college at SIU-Carbondale (class of 88).
My best friend started college at Rend Lake before transfering to SIU. He grew up in Benton, IL.
We both live on the west coast now.
This is too weird!
I feel a little nostalgic, LOL.

Awesome! I'll drop you a line. If you're about equally fluent in both, my idea would be to opt for doing Spanish first, since that language has more speakers.

That FAQ is really "ours" - it came from stuff the guys said on here. It's cool that someone among us has offered to translate it - I guess I should have thought of asking if anyone wanted to, a long time ago.
If any of you are interested in translating On Being a Longhair into your native language, visit my web page and drop me a line there. If we have several people willing to help with a language, we could even let people divide up the chapters. It's a long document so it will be plenty of work for anyone taking a translation on.

I was thinking about that too. There is not the equivalent of this site in French.
