Elastics Ripping Hair!?

Hello all,
I use those 'metalless' elastics to tie my hair back, usually in a half-tail at this point (my hair is about 10 inches now and I can't get it in a full tail yet without MANY flyaways). However, even with no metal on the elastic, it seems that I rip a ton of my hair every time I take the damn thing out! Is there something I'm doing wrong? Is there a better elastic I should buy?

Are you sure it's ripping? Does it hurt when you pull it out? If not, then it's probably just catching loose hairs and there's nothing to worry about. But if it does hurt, well then that's definitely no good and you should try something different.
Well...

...I'm not sure if the hairs are coming out at the roots, but whenever I take the elastic out, there are usually several hairs in the elastic. Now that I think about it, the hairs are not 10 inches long, so they must be ripping apart, rather than coming out at the roots, whenever I take my elastics out.
If it helps any, I have those thicker elastics (the width is larger than the typical elastics). It's hard to explain. I think they are by Scungi (sp?) and they come in, I think, two thicknesses. I have the thicker ones.

Yeah, it's probably breaking where it's tied. Try to wear it loose or in a different style more often.

Try using the soft schrunchies. You know the kind that are all kind of loose and wavey. They make small ones in dark colors, so they won't attract too much attention. I used to have the same problem you do, but since switching, it's been fine.
Thanks...

Hi-
Perhaps find the "softest Tie" you can, and when taking it off kind-of let it roll and slide gradually down. Also you might try holding the hair in back of the Tie when doing this to reduce excess pulling directly to the Scalp. Good Luck.

Did you get this sorted?
Scrunchies are a great idea (I saw that listed in the followups) but there are at least two other things to help.
There's a type of hair band similar to those metal clasp ones - not sure how you'd describe them though! They're ribbed fabric with strands of elastic through I guess - no metal. The only way these ones foul up your hair is if old dead hair that has come away from your head tangles round it - this will rip hair off just like the metal will. This happens with all fairly thin hair bands it's just the ones with metal on always get it round the metal instead of halfway round the elastic. Weird.
If you want something like a rubber band you can get hold of elasticated plastic bands instead of the rubber variety.
The best places for all of these are teenybopper stores for young girls. They're all really cheap as they come in little packets of 50 or more bands for anything around £3 (ish). Coloured, transparent and black.
'k? :)
ps - make sure you cut off any dead hair from ANY hair bands whenever you pull them out to prevent ripping the next time you wear it. Trying to pull them off wrecks the hair bands.
