Hi there guys I have a question. What is exactly meant as the awkward stage in hair growth? In terms of inches of hair growth when does it start? I have 4 inches of hair in the back and 2 inches on top.And when does the awkward stage end in terms of inches of hair growth? I have curly hair,so when will it begin and end for me in terms of inches? Also do you guys or gals recommend chemically straightening my hair while i'm trying to grow it so it won't look so bushy? My goal is to have it down to the base of my neck.I have been sucessfully growing 1 inch of hair growth every month. Please help?

The 'awkward stage' begins when your bangs reach your nose in length. That could be about 5 or 6 inches, depends and it makes you feel like cutting it. DONT CUT IT!! Once it has grown past your nose and doesnt get in your way anymore, thats when it ends. Now a bit about me, im new here too, and ive been growing my hair since 26 November 2003. My hair is 3 and a half inches on top and 4 inches at the back. Hope that helped you lol.

First off let me say congratulations! If you are experiencing 1" of growth per month then you are double the average. So the awkward stage will last half as long for you as it does for most. The awkward stage begins when you think your hair looks messy or it isn't behaving the way you want it to. So guessing from your post, I think you're entering it now. It will end when you can successfully gather all of your hair into a ponytail or otherwise control it in a way that satisfies you. This usually happens somewhere between 9 to 12 inches of total length.

Your case may be different, but my awkward stage has only seem to get worse. Not because of my hair length, but by my perception of how I feel about my hair in its current state.
Of course, you may be different. Getting to the 11 to 12 inch mark might settle the awkward stage for you. The longer the hair gets, the more it should lay down more and stay neater, but you'll just have to see.

your hair looks cool now that you've had a little trim, and i've just realised you'd look a lot like brandon boyd of incubus if you had a bit of a goatee. speaking of which, he's always had interesting hair of medium to longish length

It varies really...
NewChris & Reflective have very different ideas, so I guess that goes to show its different from one person to the next.
Not sure I suscribe to the theory that the awkward stage ends when your hair can reach a ponytail - Just cos you can tie your hair back it doesn't mean that your hair won't still be awkward when its loose -I think Evil Milkman is discovering that right now!
The end of the awkward stage is really a matter of really when you feel happiest with your hair.
There is always a stage when it gets to a certain length, when your old style nolonger works and you have to find a new way of styling your hair to accommodate the extra length. As your hair grows out you will proabably find yourself styling your hair several different ways to get a look you are comfortable with.
My theory is that as each style comes to the end of useful cycle, (thanks to the extra length) you'll experience another awkward phase until you find a new way of styling your hair that works.
At some point it might become impossible to control, perhaps because your hair has an uneven cut or its sticking out in places you dont want it to. At this point you have to:
a) Stick it out until its long enough to do something else with.
b) Wear a really messy style
c) Get a 1/2 trim to tidy-up.
Sorry if that doesnt really answer the question, there are no certainties except that at some point over the next 2 years you are gonna be really fed up with the way your hair looks!
Good answer! nt
