Patience, young padawan. The journey ahead of you will be long and difficult, but perseverence will be the key to overcoming the obstacles on your path.
Or, in less Jedi Master-ish terms, you gotta be patient, man. You are now in what has been dubbed the "Awkward Stage". It's the point in growing out your hair where it's no longer truly short, and not yet truly long. You can expect the awkward stage to end anywhere between one and a half to two years of growth. Yeah, it may seem like forever, but after a few bad hair days, you'll have the long hair you've been striving for.
There are a couple of methoods for controlling "Awkward Stage" hair. One can use any number of hair accessories; this is a choice usually ignored by guys, as most hair accessories appear feminine. The other methoods I am aware of is either adding liberal amounts of gunk to ones hair in an attempt to make it staionary, or covering it up with a bandana, or a hat, or whatever. Personally, I didn't bother trying to controll it too much, and just roughed it out.
I hope this information has been helpful, and I wish you the best of luck in your journey.

In the long run, it is best to try styles that fit your hair instead of fighting it. This can be a bitch if one is used to controlled styles. If your hair wants to curl, FIND A LOOK THAT EMBRACES IT. It will save you a lot of frustration and time. How your hair looks will not matter to people as much as your personality.
The best...

...4 things I can offer are: hair accessories (I use at home with the exception of hair ties), gel, hats and...patience.
Good luck in the AS (awkward stage)

I have very curly hair too, which I've been growing out for 11 months. An often-overlooked part of preventing the infamous frizz involves the way you towel-dry your hair. It'll get super frizzy if you towel-dry too aggressively. Instead, just pat it gently, removing excess water. Shampooing once or twice a week is just fine for curly hair, which needs a lot of moisture. You may also want to try a shampoo/conditioner/spray-gel system designed specifically for curly hair. I wish the name wasn't so feminine, but I use Loreal's new Vive Curl-Moisture shampoo, conditioner and spray gel which helps retain moisture and prevent frizz. You may also consider sleeping with a humidifier, esp. in the winter months when electric heat can dry out your hair.
