Straightening products?

Has anyone had any luck with straightening or "de-curling" products? I had some money to blow, so wandered into my local girly hair goop aisle to buy:

Citre Shine Straightening Balm
John Frieda Wind-Down Relaxing Creme
Special Effects (?) Straighten-Out smoothing treatment

The directions say these may require the use of a hair dryer while holding the curl tightly flat against your head. I did this, and all that happened was the curled ends frizzed up and looked poofy. The Citre Shine and John Frieda stuff seems to help without the hair dryer, though. If I put them in like gel, then air dry, then comb through, the hair feels heavier and lays flatter, though also has a greasy feeling to it as well.

Have any of you tried the above or anything similar? What about straightening irons? My hair really isn't curly, just a bit wavy. I have the same problem that other people have posted about. The hair in back wants to "wing out" so the back of my head looks like a duck's ass. :) Do I just have to wait for the hair to get long enough to fall?

Thanks. This board is a great resource and I read it often!
