Biotin?
Posted by Moonin on March 01, 2004 at 17:56:43: Previous Next
I have been reading a lot of posts in this board about Biotin related to hair growth.
For those people who tried it, does it really work? Right now I am just taking Centrum multivitamin and minerals. and it has only 10% of the daily value of biotin. I'm thinking that too much can lead to toxicity, but I havent read anything about the toxicity symptoms yet.
And how much is biotin?

I'm currently taking ASDA Hair, Skin and Nails multivitamins, I would recommend them, but again, it does not seem to contain much biotin.
You said something about too much vitamins being toxic. For example, one the ingredients is pantothenic acid, which speeds up energy being released from food and everything in general, and although not being linked to hair growth directly, it contains 900%RDA which is nine times higher than the normal RDA.
Does anyone else here take Asda (or Walmart as it is called in America,) the same Hair skin and nails vitamins as me?

I tried skin hair and nails and it didn't do squat for me. My nails grew a little bit faster, but my hair stayed at 1/2 inch per month.

I take Biotin, and yes it really does work. I take a multivitamin as well though, but it only contains 35% of the daily recommended intake. The seperate capsules I take contain 333% and I take about 4 of them a day. There are no known side effects of Biotin, so you can pretty much take as many as you want... I could down this whole bottle and it would be safe lol. My bottle cost me $7.99 for 100 capsules. pretty cheap!

Does the bottle of Biotin that you have, does it say USP, (United States Pharmacopeial) I try to buy vitamins that have the USP label on them, because they have been tested to be safe, that's what my nutrition teacher suggested. always check it, USP label.
I may have to give biotin a try.

just a BTW, in case you want to know. The testing is done on animals, not humans.
Not that I advocate inhumane testing on humans either, but it is a bit of choosing the lesser of two evils.

Most definitely! Most people who take a good dose of it notice results. And the other guys right about it not being toxic, it has no known side effects. I was taking 1200 mcg, but I decided to try a new one that has 2000, this seems to be the largest dose sold. The only real side effect(if you can call it that) is that it not only makes your hair grow at its top speed but it also does the same with your nails. But thats nothing really. As for how much it costs, a 2 month supply costs me 15.00 so its not too expensive.

Am I right to assume that taking biotin would also increase the growth rate of body hair as well (facial, pubic) ?

LOL, thats a good question, but since body hair cant grow very long in the first place my guess is it grows faster but isnt noticible since it sheds before you can see it.

...tried Hair Skin and Nails, GNC's Men's UltraNourish Hair and, most recently, Biotin of 2000 mcg. I honestly can't say that any of these products did anything for my hair. The only result I can say for sure is that the Hair, Skin and Nails pills made my nails grow about 5x faster than normal.
For me, after my Biotin pills run out, I'm only going to take my multi-vitamin and mineral pill (no hair products pills). After almost 2 years of experimenting with products to make my hair grow faster, none seemed to work for me. I suppose if your not taking enough of the "stuff" your body needs to grow hair efficiently, then these products might work. Otherwise, take a good dose of 'time and patience'! :)

The FDA has already proven beyond any doubt that there is NO supplement, no vitamin, no magic potion....NOTHING....that will make your hair grow faster.
Save your money and buy something that's of real value.
Biotin is a waste of money. The last thing anyone should ever believe are testimonials. They help sell stuff, but they are rarely, if ever, factually based.
The FDA did a study a couple of years ago, and I posted the results to this very board. They had several control groups. One took a vitamin, another some other "miracle grow" for hair, and another who took a placebo. There was NO difference in length between the three groups at 3 months, 6 months, and a year.
Remember....there is NOTHING at all that makes hair grow faster!

Why is it always the same?
Forgot the fake status of your so called FDA report? It was not conclusive and it covered only some products. Let people reach their potential by enhancing their nutrition.!!!

As a longhair for 25+ years who has seen the Biotins of the world come and go, and all becoming discredited, I speak from knowledge and experience.
And just who are you? I doubt your hair is as long or as nice as mine. I also doubt you have long hair or if you do have had it for very long.
There's a sucker born every minute. I just don't like when they make suckers out of people who want long hair.
Get educated and learn something. It'll do you good.

1. I've been around for a while, I just changed my nickname
2. You have never posted pictures of your hair
3. You're the angriest most intolerant person on the board
4. You could have been born with long hair, it doesn't make you wiser, and even having had it for 25 years proves you have no experience with the latest techniques for speeding hair growth, simply because you don't need it.
5. Even if someone would see no benefit from biotin on their hair growth, it will help the quality of the hair and the overall health.
6. Your personal expirience is a slice of the pie, many of us has seen benefits from hair supplements because the way we eat, the fact we smoke, the amount of soda and junk food hurts your hair growth. I've explained this 1000 times, you're just like a liberal Pat Buchanan.
7. You proved your ignorance when you said the Egyptians didn't write about Jesus.... timeline my friend.... timeline and general culture.
8. This is a friendly place and you just ignite debate where there is no need.

Blow by blow reply....
: 1. I've been around for a while, I just changed my nickname
Whatever, dude.
: 2. You have never posted pictures of your hair
As a matter of fact, I have. In fact, I've posted DOZENS throughout the years. Many of which are still on the pic upload site. Your ignorance is showing here.
: 3. You're the angriest most intolerant person on the board
How is it being intolerant when I'm telling people not to believe your hype regarding a wortless product? I'm simply giving good advice and trying to stop people from throwing away their money. I suppose Hair Religion is intolerant too since he says the exact same thing in his RAQ!
: 4. You could have been born with long hair, it doesn't make you wiser, and even having had it for 25 years proves you have no experience with the latest techniques for speeding hair growth, simply because you don't need it.
NOTHING speeds hair growth. The FDA has time and time again proven it. Medical doctors have researched it and proven it. Some people can't get past wishful thinking and hoping for a magic pill to overcome their impatience. Others, those like you, refuse to believe in conclusive medical evidence that shows you're simply wrong. It's like holding up a sheet of blue paper and telling you it's blue and you insist it's red.
: 5. Even if someone would see no benefit from biotin on their hair growth, it will help the quality of the hair and the overall health.
No it will not. It simply doesn't work that way. Excuse me if I believe science and medical reports before I believe someone like you who is obvioulsy clueless.
: 6. Your personal expirience is a slice of the pie, many of us has seen benefits from hair supplements because the way we eat, the fact we smoke, the amount of soda and junk food hurts your hair growth. I've explained this 1000 times, you're just like a liberal Pat Buchanan.
All of the excuses, quid pro quos, and ifs don't matter. Period.
: 7. You proved your ignorance when you said the Egyptians didn't write about Jesus.... timeline my friend.... timeline and general culture.
The fact remains that no society with a written language ever mentioned him. Not even one time in any written language of that time did anyone ever mention Jesus or any of the miracles done by him or anyone else (Moses, etc).
: 8. This is a friendly place and you just ignite debate where there is no need.
There is a need when people spread false hope and complete and utter misinformation. No one should ever be encouraged to waste their money on stuff that simply will not help. You may as well set your cash on fire. Watching your money burn makes your hair grow just as fast as Biotin or any of the other hundreds of products that have made the same claim.
: Please Rokker try to be more open and smile cause life is nice to live.
I'm more than smiling, my friend. I'm laughing. But it's okay...I'm not laughing at you...I'm laughing with you!

Short and sweet here......
The F.D.A. has CONCLUSIVELY and REPEATEDLY proven beyond any doubt whatsoever that no....none....not a single thing....makes hair grow faster.
So save your money and buy something of value. If you buy biotin or any other product that promises you faster hair growth, you may as well just set it on fire and watch it burn. Watching your money burn will make your hair grow just as fast as biotin.
It's a proven scientific fact.
