Just had a haircut...

... and I feel great! I'd gone almost 3 years without a cut and the ends were beyond nasty. I'd been meaning to get one for months but I was a too nervous! Anyway, I only had about 2 inches nipped off at the ends but I am SO glad I did. I thought the hair dresser would be critical etc but she wasn't at all. I really regret not having a regular trims along the way because of the split and frayed ends that have developed.
No photos I'm afraid but my hair is now around the nipple area and primed and ready for more growth!
So, the moral of the story? Get little trims along the way for anyone starting out. That is my biggest regret in the whole hair growing process.

Excellent advice, man. I've been at the whole growing-out process a year now but have had two maintenance trims along the way so I'm only at about 5" all around (maybe a little longer). It's been worth it. So you're advice is right on. I've said it many times here on the "board" that it's great to counsel with the pros--the stylists--to help get that hair growth looking equal to the value of the time it takes to grow it out. Thanks. Josh

I've grown mine for 3-4 years now without any trims. It's a curly, fuzzy mess - split ends aplenty - but I don't want a trim!
Split ends aren't detrimental to the growth of your hair, are they?

Not really, they can be unsightly if seen real up close, but most people will see you from a distance and not care.

There's a topic on split ends about two-thirds down the main page under the title 'split ends' posted by someone called 'GJUiCE'. Check it out for more info.

Some people may not be bothered by split ends (after all, they don't affect growth, and you won't every truly get RID of them), and some may not get split ends.
My friend who is just past the two year mark still washes his hair daily with a bar of soap and no conditioner. No split ends and his hair is very silky.
Different strokes.

I'm kinda revising my opinion on trims at the moment. I think they are essential during the early months to keep your hair looking good, but once you get passed your ears, you hair should be well shaped for growing and you'll only need to have trim IF you want to tidy up split ends.
But a lot of advice given about trims isn't right for everyone. It depends on your hair type, sometimes a little extra length (and with it weight of hair) is all you need to make your hair look tidier. This is especially true if whilst growing out you suffer from the king charles spaniel effect along the neck and collar. Trust me I speak from experience.
