Growing out natural hair color...
Posted by Darryl on March 08, 2004 at 07:05:58: Previous Next
My natural hair color is medium brown, but is currently dyed black because I was an idiot and felt like dying my hair black a while ago. I now want to regrow my natural color back out. I have been growing my hair for a long time and do not want to get it shaved off and start over, going through the awkward phase again.
What is the best way I should go about doing this? I could just let it grow but then i'd have brown roots for a long time and my hair would look pretty wierd. Or i could shave it down to where the natural color has grown out, which is about half an inch right now, but I do not want to do this. Any suggestions?

When my hair was frosted blonde, I just let it grow back out. It ended up being medium brown with blonde tips. Actually looked pretty cool. When I trimmed my hair, most of the blonde was cut out.
Hope I helped.

Go to a reputable salon. A specialist can strip off the hair color for you. I've known many people who have made this same mistake.
Keep the hair! It can be fixed.

Very sound advice, seeking the help of a professional cosmetologist who has expertise in hair coloring is the best course of action in this situation. Absalom

This is what I have decided to do, I'll see if I can post some before and after pics to see how much color they actually get out.

Well, as you know, you have 3 choices:
Cut off the colored hair
have it PROFESSIONALLY colored to match your natural color (as close as possible to your natural color)
Let it grow with the dyed portion left as it is, and either slowly trim it off once it is the length you want or slowly have it trimmed off every so often with "mainentance trims" as split ends appear (just dusting is preferred...1/4" every 3-6 months)
No one can tell you which to do. The choice is yours, as it is your hair. You should do what makes you happy.
If you do choose to have a color match dye done, have it done by a professional. They are taught to color match, and have more selections of colors to use than you will see on the shelves at the store. And the stuff on the store shelves is much more harsh and damaging than what they use at a salon.
I chose to just let mine grow out. I've lived through all the "time to touch your hair up" comments. It doesn't happen as much now that I have a year of natural hair growth.

I'm regrowing my natural color too (light brown, with all sorts of natural highlights) from a blue-black dying in August. I have about 3½ inch of natural hair and 15 inch of dyed hair (the dye fades in some places, so my natural color may take over a little there too). I'm regrowing it until waist lenght or so, where I might trim it (this will probably be my goal lenght) as it grows.
It doesn't look so weird, especially if the colors aren't too far apart like black and brown. I'd say keep it and let it grow.

See the Professionals, there is a kind of solution u can apply on your dyed hair to remove the color, as long as you didn't bleach your hair, your original color will show. However not every single solon is able to carry this kind of solution, make sure to do some research before you walk in. Good luck.
