"It also applies to foreigners and
barbers are being set up at AIRPORTS and BORDER CROSSINGS
to make sure the new ruling is adhered to." [!!!]
"Other laws include a ban on BALLET and a tax on foreigners
wanting to marry women from Turkmenistan AND includes a honeymoon BED SHEETS TAX." !!!!

The Deep End:
The Naked Truth
Candidates who bare it all, a hair-raising presidential comment, and a frighteningly large sausage.

Hair-assment in Turkmenistan In a demonstration of his commitment to serious political matters, Turkmenistan's president has taken the time to officially denounce young men who wear their hair long or let their beards grow. State-run television reported that President Saparmurat Niyazov spoke out against the national crisis of excess hair on men during a cabinet meeting in February. Niyazov's remarks often become law in Turkmenistan, where he has ruled since the Soviet-era, beginning in 1985. Last year, the president commented that girls should wear braids and traditional Turkmen hats. It immediately became the rule in all secondary and high schools. The secular governments of Central Asia have tried to discourage any forms of Islamic extremism, including the appearance of it, and beards commonly symbolize a commitment to the Muslim faith. No longer allowed are beards, moustaches or long hair on men, Ananova reported Monday. The law also includes visitors. President Saparmurat Niyazov announced barbers would be set up at airports and the country's borders to give makeovers to all visitors who do not meet the strict standards. Niyazov, who became Turkmenistan's president for life in 1985, said excess hair gives outsiders the "wrong impression" of the country and is "unhygienic." The latest law is just one of a string of strange regulations imposed by Niyazov, who has also banned ballet and imposed a tax on outsiders who wish to marry a Turkmenistan woman.

Another strange place i probably won't visit. It is unfortunate, Imaging the police trying to run around and enforce unshaven or longhaired men. If you were a cop, think of how many peolpe you see in the day that would be in violation of these laws? I guess it is another way to oppress human tendancies, too bad these people don't fight back a little, but then they'd probably get executed.
I am very discouraged with the world today, I doubt I would ever want to bring children into it. I feel so forutnate to be as able to choose for my self what to do with my life, but I worry things are just going to continue to get worse.

Although I don't normally support it, a little anarchy might be helpful in this situation. It sounds like it is time for the people there to rise up against those currently in power and set up a democratic government. Absalom

No, really they wouldn't - in Indo-Afghan Islam, a centuries-old tradition of long hair on men exists, preferably among sufis (mystics) and dervishes!
Awal rish - baz darvish! (Afghan proverb, meaning "first the beard, then the dervish")
See you in Khyberspace!

Well, I guess that is what is important, to try and look like you are being hygenic even if you aren't.
I would assume that they will follow with laws about wearing clean clothing (washing machine sales would rise), bathing, hand washing rules for food workers and making sure that the food industry is regulated like we do here in the U.S. (unless, of course, they are not really serious about hygiene).
Kind of reminds me about an article I saw years ago about a firefighter in the U.S. who got fired because he wouldn't conform to the rule about not having chest hair for health/hygiene reasons (however that works).
