Trim or Not to Trim...

Hello. My hair is wavy/curly and thick. I have been growing it out for 16 months now from about 1". The back, of course, is longer than the rest. Should I cut about 1" off the very back so that the rest of my hair can catch up? My ponytail looks funny because the lower half is fuller than the upper half.
The question I have to ask myself is how long do I want my hair. I'm not sure, yet. Shoulders would probably be the max for me. I can post a picture if that would help.
Thanks!

Wow Congrats on 16 months! Growing from 1 inch should mean you have about 9 inches of length right now, probably more!
This means that the hair at the bad, should be away down to your shoulder blades, whilst the hair at you bangs is probably around your chin. This means there could be a 6 inch difference between how long the top layers (hair on top of your head) and your lower layers (back n sides) appear as they fall around your head.
If you trim to even up you would have to take about 5-6 inches off the back, slightly less of the sides and nothing off the top, this might be a little drastic. I wouldn't recommend it.
If you want to "tidy up" I'd say go with your gut and get about an inch taken off the back and the ends off everywhere except the top most layers. This will maintain your layers which is pretty good for thick hair as the layers actually take out the bulk of the hair, whereas if you cut it all one length and evened it up, it might look a lot thicker.
Alternatively you can just leave it as is, if your happy why change?

Ive been growing my hair probably closer to 18 months. And thought about evening out the bottom layer to the top but then relized pretty much waht the other responce said. you would have to hack off most of the under layer which wouldnt make much sence. So I decided when I reach my goal growth of three years. I will then start getting trims but let the upeer layer even out so that it is longer then the under layer which will probably take another big amounjt of time to accomplish.

A photo would help..........so I can only give an opinion from a distance, but I would tend to leave things as they are for now and until you yourself decide for sure just how you would like your hair. Good Luck.
