personal trimming

Hi all. I was curious if anyone ever trims their own hair other than just split ends. Does anyone or has anyone ever trimmed like 1/4 of an inch or even a half inch off? Is there a way to learn for a person to do thi sthemself? Techniques to use such as separating the hair to distinguish the hair that has been trimmed from the hair that hasn't been trimmed? And maytbe a hair trimming kit with special scissors? I'd be curious and would greatly appreciate some responses on this.
Thanks!

I recently trimmed 3 inches off the back and an inch off the front of my own hair.

Not adviseable.
Even with really long hair you just can't get at it all to cut it straight. (With the possible exception of the bangs.) I'd always get someone else to do it.
If you do insist on cutting it yourself, then there are two techniques you should learn.
Blunt cut - Comb the hair down and cut straight, if you hair is a little rebelious then wet it slightly before you trim. But makesure you cut straight and symectrically around your head.
Layered or blended cut - Pull your hair out at an angle from your head. cut in a straight line from top to bottom. (OK there's a little more too it than that and its pretty tricky to get right on large segments of hair without practice.) Its practically impossible to do on your own hair, accept around the front of the head.
Generally not recommend to try this though.
Depends on your length

Hello Will,
A helpful lady named Feye created a site with instructions and pictures to assist others in trimming their length with a blunt cut in straight, U-shaped, or V-shaped varieties.
She makes a ponytail then pulls the ponytail holder straight down to almost the ends which she can then bring around to the front to trim where she can see what she is doing. All you need is hair long enough to bring forward all at once or one side at a time.
I have never tried this as I am a tapered ends fan on myself but I have read a lot of good reviews of Feye's instructions on other hair boards.
