Off to the races...hair style needed

Hey everyone...been growing out my hair for a good few months now an its getting longer : ) 7" in the longest part shorter tho at the front. I havent had it cut/styled in this time so its kinda boring looking (i guess this is the awkward stage i've heard so much about) its straight and just sorta sits there and quiffs a bit at the front. I dont really use any styling products for hold but I do use like smoothing creams/serums now and again... (ok daily!)
Well...i'm off to the the races in a few weeks (lady's day - aintree - where the grand national is for none british ppl) so i've gotta get all suited up and I just dont know what to do with my hair!! When it was shorter i'd never have had this problem but i just dont know what look to go for! I'm torn between my natural straight look with a bit of smoothing cream (would this go with a suit?...if it where longer i'd just go for it but its sorta looks like i can't be bothered with a hair cut as apposed to im growing it out you know like I havent made the effort...at least thats what i think, others have told me it looks good the way it is). Or i sorta like when you see movie stars at premieres etc with longish hair an they have it all shiney and sculptured looking, looks good with a suit, they tend not to have st8 hair tho I guess...any product rec's anyone to get this look? - you know the sorta slightly wet v- shiney look with load'sa texture.....pomade?
i'll probably get it cut/styled before i go so that'll make it look more interesting but I'm still torn between a natural look or a producted up look, as i havent really seen a longish haired guy in a suit without thier hair being gelled/moulded etc... you know like patrick bateman in american psycho - not real life i know but you get the idea. I'll be wearing a black suit if it helps lol. Sorry no pic to show, but i've not got a digital cam yet!!

Try scrunching your hair instead of cutting it.
Maybe some of you hair stylists can direct him to the how-to's of hair scrunching.
Or possibly a french braid. That always looks cool on a guy.

Cool i like that, but mines not quite that long at the front...but i get the idea - products! as for a french braid i'd love that!...maybe next year when it may be long enough lol. At the mo mines sorta like chris's off charmed (if you watch it lol) maybe a little longer cos i do seem to find these like 7" hairs about, it just about goes behind my ears anyway. Wish i could grow some facial hair to match tho, always think it looks better on guys with longish hair, im 21 an it just doesnt happen lol...ok it does a bit but not much.
How does scrunching work?...is it you just basically scrunch like a gel through damp hair and leave it to dry or something?....might try it now if it is (i've just got out of the shower).
i guess once i've seen a stylist I'll have more options, ...an ive still got a few weeks to go yet. It scares me to go get it cut tho cause i know if they take too much off it'll take ages to grow back!! This one time at this place called voodoo in England i'd been growing it out for a few months and i said im trying it grow it long, and the guy was like uhuh and chatting away with his mates...next thing he just cuts my sides off, i swear i wanted to cry.

Well you could get a trim to even things up and make it look neater, but makesure you are explicit with the stylist...
"Just take off the ends - I'm growing it long." - Then tell him/her exactly how long! Makesure your very clear about this.
Or you could wear a messy look... bit of a grunge look never went amiss... Lets face it the Gran National - look at all those crazy outfits - whats wrong with Crazy hair - whats that pundits name who wears the daft jackets on Channel 4 (or is BBC?) he has really wild hair.
But my best suggestion given you have about 7" of length would be to try the half-tail. (Think Beckham) When you do it right it can look really smart, perfect for a race day.

K, so I had a trim today an it went ok!! I'm pleased with the result, its not too drastic just neatened up and the layers are more defined - i think that was the problem it just sorta blended in b4 an looked like a wig or something. I told the stylist I was growing it out and she was like "Ooo what's made you wanna do that" "do people like it long on you" which was a little wierd lol. I guess I can just let it grow out now it has more shape to it. The only critism tho is that she never wet my hair when she cut it so its a tiny bit blunt at the ends but I'll forgive her seen as she said "wow your hairs in a lovely condition".
Ooo I know who you mean! - actually met him once when I was an extra on watchdog lol cant think of his name tho! well I can safely say whatever I decide to do it wont be anywhere as near as bad looking as his!!
It actually looks shorta now even tho only a tiny bit was taken off, 7" may have been a bit of wishfull thinking! so its still a bit too short for a half pony : ( i guess I'll just end up using some redken outshine, and water wax on the ends to define it.....depends on the weather anyway I guess!! today it was soooo windy my hair was just everwhere! in fact someone went "ha!" when they drove past me - it was all in my face poking me in the eyes!, so I guess I dont wanna overload it on the day if its not going to stay if its windy or raining cos it'll just end up setting in wierd shapes.
I watched underworld last night - pretty good film not great but it did give me hair inspirations...I like the style of Kraven I think he was called, thats the length I'll probably keep mine at for a while when it gets there....
