Is there anyway to tell? thanks

Umm you could grow it and see, my only suggestion. If you don't like it you can always hack it all off

The sort of length you are talking about is not hard to reach and its quite easily to get styled and cut into a good shape (just think Tom Cruise MI:2).
The thing your probably not realising is that you can still get maintenance cuts to keep your hair in shape whilst you grow it to your desired length. You just have to go to a salon, find a decent stylist, explain your goals to her and stick with her whilst you get the length you want. You'll only be trimming the hair to keep in shape, not to take anything off the length.
This isn't always the best strategy if you want really long hair, but it'll work just fine for the sort of length you are talking about. And you'll keep your hair looking pretty neat and tidy along the way.
Will it curl? I dunno.. why don't you grow it and see. If it does then there are plenty of ways you can control it, just post for help.
