ADVICE PLEASE !!!!

I am in desperate need of some advise. First a little back ground. New years eve 2002 I completely shaved my head, since that time I have had only three "maintenance" hair cuts, I have not had any since October 2003. My hair currently is approx. 41/2" to 5" on top, covers about 3/4 of my ears and just touchs my shirt coller in back. My problem is that it just does'nt look good, It is too long to do anything with and too short to do anything else with. I have tried just washing it and letting it go, I have tried parting it on the side and in the middle, now I am just kinda slicking it back. I know this may normal during the transision but it is really starting to bother me. People at work are starting to ask "When are you going to do something with your hair." My question is, Is there anything I can do to make it look more in control while it is growing? Is there some cut that would make it look less "poofy" and scraggely during this period. I am about to the point of cutting it off again. I really don't want to do this but I may not have much choice. If anyone has any suggestions I would greatly appreciate them. If there is a cut that would help please give me the name or discription of the style, or if possible a picture. If not how do I stand it for another 2 or 3 months till it gets longer and stats to behave a little better. Thanks in advance for your help and advice.
Please don't shout

Typing in all caps is shouting and considered rude netiquette. Please do not shout in future postings. Thanks.

What you're going through is called the 'Awkward Stage!' Don't cut your hair, cutting it will only prolong the suffering if you're really intent on growing your hair. During this stage, you'll probably look the worst and porbably feel the worst you have ever been, and it's not easy getting through it, but if your desire for long hair is great, and you want to feel a change from your normal short hair, just don't cut it. I'm also in the awkward stage and it's pretty bad, but I like to know that my hair is growing, i'd rather see it in my eyes than not being able to see it. Think, in a couple of months, you'll be out of it and you'll be having a great time! Little do these people who mock you know that in a couple of months, it will be them who look the dorks while you get all the female attention;)

I'm around the same area right now, My hairs really thick and has just started to weigh itself down although. Best thing you can probally do is try to stick it through as hard as it is for most people. The less you worry about how it ''looks'' the easier it will be, try taking your mind off of it. If it becomes much of an issue, depending where you work maybe you can wear a bandanna or such, some places do allow this. Good luck!

Hi. I am new to this board - I have been growing my hair since July 2003. I think I am nearing the end of the arkwardness stage, but one thing I found that works for me is straight after washing and towel drying my hair, while it is still slightly damp, put on a close fitting hat and leave it on for an hour or so until the hair is dried. My hair dries in place and stays down when I remove the hat!
I have several times considered chopping it off and going back to boring short hair, but after reading Bill & Larry's article at http://www.choisser.com/longhair/ I am inspired again :)

Yes, this link from Bill( www.choisser.com/longhair) is really great. Even I am from Germany, I will understand this all. ;-)
Growing out the hair is a journey you must do. So resist to cut your hair and grome it well. Gel/Wax and so will help. Good luck!

Well, the only things that worked for me (after much experimentation)
were L'Oreal MELTing Gel & L'Oreal Liquid SPRAY Gel.
Put some in your clean, damp hair, style it as flat as best you can
and try NOT to mess with it at all (or as little as possible!)
Also, a couple of hair pins positioned at strategic places
and well hidden will prevent you from 'jumping overboard.'
Good luck & best wishes on your Journey!

The best thing you can do right now is learn to ignore hair comments. I know that's a heck of a lot easier said than done...but it can be done.
I lived through months of "time to see the stylist" and "isn't is about time to have your hair done" and "a little bit late on your hair dye, aren't you?" ... and my all time favorite: "is that your natural hair color?" ROFLMAO
Believe me, once you get through that you reach a stage where everyone knows that you aren't going to cave. You are growing your hair, and there is nothing they can say that will stop you.
Well, except some mothers...LOL, mothers never give up...

So let me get this right? You've been growing since the start of 2003 and you have had 3 maintenance trims, yet you only have 4.5 inches of length?
To me that sounds like a pretty severe set of maintenance trims, you should have atleast 8 or even 9 inches of length by now... First thing you should do is sack your stylist! Or atleast explain your goals to them so they no not to cut so much. If you are growing out you should trim next to nothing off the top.
But hey.. 4.5 inches is a really awkward length to do anything with, things get much easier when its just a little longer, even as little as 6 inches and your hair becomes a little more manageable, the weight should help keep your hair down and less poofy. My hair was awful when it was that length. Just hang on for another few months and things will get a lot better, plus a number of other styling options will become available to you.
My advice for now is to get a good smoothing Shampoo and Conditioner, (separate shampoo and conditioner) it should make your hair more manageable and easier to control.
Oh and I dont know how you are styling your hair at the moment, (and you may already do this,) but one of the things I did to make my hair look neater, was to tuck the tufts of hair that grew around my ears back behind my ears, and I grew short sideburns, this gives a more "neat n tidy" look.
Hope that helps a little.
