I am in high school and while I'm trying to grow my hair, my mom makes me get maintenance cuts. She says I have to shape it. What can I do?

You didn't tell us the length you are trying to grow your hair to. But if you have very-long in mind, the hair will almost shape itself as it gets longer. If the maintenance cuts are very frequent, your hair will never be allowed to reach the goal you have in mind. Perhaps tell her this? (I don't know your mother or if she is against Long Hair on Men.)

Yeah I agree with Justin, remind your mom that hair only grows 1/2 inch per month, and you can't feasible grow your hair unless you allow atleast 3 months between maintenance trims. Otherwise you just snip off all your progress.
Maintenance trims are alright, if you want to keep your hair tidy and shaped whilst you grow it out, but they should focus on keeping the back and sides in shape, there is no reason to cut their hair on the top of your head.

You might want to refer to my previous posts dated 3/10/04 and 3/15/04 on maint. trims.
I prefer to keep the ends neat in the back but only get about 1/2" snipped every three months. (three steps forward and one step back) I might consider doing this a little more often now that my hair is at a nice length. I want the ends to thicken up now. You may find that it will take a lot longer for the front to reach the ends of the back and sides, so try to avoid trimming this area until then.

Everyone told me to get some maintenance cuts because my under layer was getting a little knotted and they said that stopped growth. Which made no sence seeing as hair grows from the root not the tip so i never got any trims.
