I don't like my curly hair

Hi. I currently have short and very curly hair. I discovered this when I decided that I would let it grow and eventually it started to look like an "afro" as it became longer. Following the "grass is greener" logic, I would rather my hair be straight. At the very minimum I would like to get it to grow down, not up. Please advise, thanks.

Yeah, I've only recently been accepting my curly hair. However, to me, they aren't as curly as 'most' peoples'. It's more like loose curls, and they curl every one inches. I think it will look really great when it's very long, but of course can look bad when it's in the awkward stage.
Eventually, however, if you have enough patience, your hair will weigh itself down. It just will.
Do you really think your hair will be growing "up" forever? I'd certainly enjoy seeing hair grow eight inches high!

Hi Qwer Ty:
I, too, have curly hair. It can be trying, especially for the first several months -- okay, year and a half -- you're growing it out. However, it is possible to make the most of your curls. One guy with incredible curly hair is a musician from Colombia named Cabas. Check out his pics at http://www.cabas.net. Inspiring!
I resorted to blow-drying my hair straight during the awkward phase and used Phyto products (Phytobrush, Phytosesame and Phytodefrisant) to do so. I'm only recently out of the awkward phase, and now it seems those seemingly endless weeks and months of frustration were a mere drop in the bucket. In other word, hang in there!
Cheers,
Jeremy

I hope Silvio Massaro of Vanishing Point on the lower left can provide you with some inspiration.
Silvio's curly hair is gorgeous.
Danny Cecati of Eyefear is on the bottom right. He most likely has the longest hair of any rock singer.
The guys in the back are Black Majesty and a few of them have fairly curly long hair too.

Thanks for showing that picture...I was just going to ask for some good examples of long curly hair.
Nevertheless, I still wish I had hair that was straighter. As I was reading pages linked from a later post ( http://www.choisser.com/longhair/two.html ) I learned about how having curly hair is a disadvantage when you want to grow it long.
Perhaps my opinion will change over time, as I wait for my hair to eventually pull itself down. I've only been letting it grow for about 4 months or so and it's about 3.5 inches long at best. Of course, it curls up and the result is that I have about an inch of hair going upwards.
Is curly hair rare? Most of the hair I notice, whether it be short or long, appears to be straight. Even smaller is the number of guys I see that have long, curly hair. In the media and in person.
I have a lot of disappointment and little appreciation for the hair I have. I know that several hair-straightening methods exist and can yield undesirable results, and it is from despiration that I even bothered to seek this information.
While straight long hair would be my first preference, I'd definitely be happy trying to grow my hair out to eventually look like Weird Al Yankovic. But in the "awkward phase" I wouldn't mind going for the look detailed in the 2nd and 3rd pictures on the following page: http://www.hairboutique.com/tips/tip356.htm . Problem is, my hair looks too "together" and much more like an afro than that. Will this change as it gets longer?
