growing out hair?

ok here is my problem I am 16 and I want to grow my hair out, I mean not like girl long but just like over the ears and a little longer. the only problem is that I have very course hair and it is very thick that by trying to grow it out my hair is liek a white mans fro. Should I go get it trimmed or what is there that they can do to make my hair where it is longer and not as bushy. How do I get it to grow down instead of up.Laugh out loud. Thank you

This is all you need to know, this is like a bible to us when we started growing ours out. Check it out. It was made by a wise member of this board, Bill, who knows his stuff on hair. I recommend reading it first.

Ricky,
Get one thing straight before you start. Hair Length is not means of Gender Identification, there are people on this board with waist length hair, others with shoulder length, you post implies that anyone with "Long" hair has 'hair like a girl.' That's not a way to make friends and get help from a community like this.
I'm sure you meant so offence, so as for geting your hair to the length you want, why not post a picture of what your hair looks like now and an example of what you'd like your hair to look like when your finished growing. It makes it much easier to help.

Ricky,
Because your only wish is to grow your curly hair just past your ears, your hair if it looks like an afro, will remain that way. It is not long enough at that length to laydown as you wish. There are options which include:
Gelling it, Gelling it: Which would give your hair a wet gel look all the time.
Straighten it, either through a professional or with a flat iron. Flat irons are only temporarily.

You can try japaneese thermal straighting- the stars do it but its pricy- 400 dollars. But it is amazing.
