In the clear from baldness?
Posted by eXe on April 07, 2004 at 10:29:12: Previous Next
i'm 22 and I have not yet shown signs of male pattern baldness. . meanwhile a lot of my friends (lots of them younger than I) are shedding hair like crazy..
does this mean I'm in the clear from becoming bald? (or at least, a good chance that I won't) my mother's father kept his hair for a long time, but I heard that isn't determinate... i've heard things from it being X-linked recessive (or not), to dominant in men only, etc.
does anyone know the real answer???

Hi :-)
At age 22, it is still too early to tell. Some men experience this at a young age, like friends of yours have, as you pointed out, others don't start to notice it until later. Here is a suggestion that I followed. I am 42. I had thick full hair until I was 39, and then I noticed it starting to thin on the top. There were no bald patches, but it was starting to thin. I immediately started taking a perscription drug called Propecia. Not only did it stop my hair from thinning, it allowed me to regrow most of the hair that had thinned out. So, what I'd advise is keep a close eye on your hair. If you notice it starts to thin consider taking Propecia. The sooner you start taking that product after you notice the hair is thinning the better chance it has of working. (In other words, if you wait until you have a big bald patch to consider it the effects won't be as great).

Does anyone know, and wh yare men more ikely to become bald than women, i'm taking biology A level and i know a bit in DNA and is the reason because in chromosomes, males only inheret one X chromosome, insreasing their chances of it being passed down through the family?

if it's an X-linked trait, then there is in fact no way that it can be inherited from the father's side because the father HAS to give his Y chromosome to a son.
however I have heard conflicting reports as to whether or not baldness is X-linked or not.

Does one need to continuously take Prepecia for it to keep working or do you take it for a while and then stop? I'm just curious...

Hi :-)
You have to continue to take it. If you stop then the hair loss starts up again. It works by changing a male hormone that is responsible for the hair loss.

Thanks for the answer :) (n/t)
