A minor question for Sherri
Posted by Surferdude on April 15, 2004 at 21:31:56: Previous Next
I was just wondering, do you remember when you said to me a couple of weeks ago that you soak your hair in virgin olive oil, well, if I was to do that, it will only work with blonde hair, is that true? I have light brown hair, with natural streaks of blonde, and if I soaked it in olive oil for four hours, it would not make it shimmer blonde and make it look greasy?
Sorry for this insane question, but i'm just wondering...
Thanks
Perhaps I can help

Hello Surferdude,
Olive oil used as a heavy oiling treatment that is then washed out is fine for any color, just sometimes tough to get it all out in my experience. I have found mayonnaise to be a better conditioner than a soak in olive oil. Several friends have found that the olive oil leaves their hair feeling crunchy over time and suppose it may be due to a higher acid content than other oils. Those people with coarser strands of hair do not seem to have this problem, the same kind of hair that silicones do not seem to bother.
Too much oil left in of any sort will leave you greasy in look and feel. For shimmer I'd go for a leave in oil like jojoba or coconut of just a few drops on the lower portion of hair. This will be more relevant as your hair grows longer. For now conditioner may do the trick. Another way to get shine is a diluted vinegar rinse after shampooing. It can strip off things built up on your hair (and dulling it) while also reportedly making each hair's outer layer lay flatteer and reflect light better.
Ooh, knowing Sheri will likely see this, did you have your birthday yet? If not, go grab those kids and send them out to get you a little jar of coconut oil and a bottle of some yummy smelling essential oil. They are an affordable luxury and well worth it for your hair.
Elizabeth

It isn't just for blonde hair. After allow it to soak for a couple hours I rinse it well, then shampoo and condition as usual. It doesn't look greasy after, it just shimmers. You can definitely see a difference!
