Have you considered the possibility of stress?
Though it is not common for us younger folk to get stress, it's still possible. Have a look at your life and always use conditioner :)

I'm 17 also, and in future, don't towell dry it so harshly, that may be the problem?

You're losing just as much hair now as you did then. The only difference is that the longer your hair is, the more noticeable the loss.
It's normal to lose hair every day. If you have short hair or a buzz cut, you just don't see it. With long hair, the loss is obvious.
I shed like a dog, yet I maintain the amount of hair I have. No big deal. Perfectly normal.

Whilst it is natural to shed somewhat between 50-100 hairs per day, it does not sound natural to be pulling them out by the handfulls. Did your hair become noticibly thinner when it was longer and shedding profusely? Perhaps a visit to the doctor to check for a thyroid imbalance or hormonal imbalance may be in order. To perhaps prevent this from happening you could invest in the nioxin therapy range of poo'/cond' which wash away dihydrotestosterone(?) which can cause thinning of the hair. Together with the scalp therapy this range also provides nutrients directly to the scalp which may also help. This poo' should not be used every day as it also acts like a clarifier so it'll dry out your hair if over used. For the inbetween washings a sulphate free shampoo would be much kinder on the hair which may reduce shedding. Also the way you wash/dry your hair may be having an impact on the quantity of shed hairs as can some stlying products. If you have genetic disposition to hairloss there is a prescription drug called Propecia which may help.... but if your hair is fine when it is short and only falls out when it is long it is most likely you routine which is causing it. Another possibility is diet.

Oh no its fine.... I just find that it makes my hair feel a bit dry if I use it everday thats all. For you it may be fine.

Ouch, even at such a young age? Is there a way to predict whether or not this will happen and when? Better yet, is there a way to prevent this from happening? Are the older men I see with long hair those who are lucky enough to not be having this problem?

You can try Rogaine or Propecia, but it is a life-long commitment, if it works at all.
Or you can just accept it.

Well my mother says it is diet. So this time i will try to eat a little better and also use more condinitor(SP?) and comb it more.

Be sure to use the right comb!! pref a wide toothed one or you'll probably pull loads more out : (

I kinda have this problem too. I just recently stopped taking hot showers, and using cold water on my head helped ALOT! The hot water opens the pores and feels nice, but it also opens the follicles allowing for more hair to fall out easily. When I wash my hair with cold water, less falls out.
Also, I've heard it's bad to comb the hair when it's really wet. But who knows.... my hair isn't long yet. I'm new to this.
