Going out in curlers
Posted by Michael on September 24, 2000 at 07:38:02: Previous Next
Hi Guys,
I've been setting my hair in secret for a few years now, but the urge to go out in curlers is growing. Do any of you guys have experience with this. I don't mean going to the salon (done that once too), but going to the supermarket, mail-box etc. etc.
Any tips/experiences/encouragement appreciated!
Michael

I used to set my hair in curlers to give it a turned-under look when it was below-chin length. I often carried my laundry down to the apartment laundrymat while wearing them. I'd catch a glance now and then, but I didn't pay much attention. Seems like I made a fast-food drive-through or so in curlers. I didn't go out in curlers often, but neither do women, these days.
In this anything-goes day of both genders wearing buz-cuts, braids, and ponytails, I don't see why your curlers should need to be secret.

Hi Michael don't worry about going out in curlers these days, because
everything goes as far as the way we look. I've been a hairdresser for at least 17 years and I have seen everything. One dream I do have and that is to give a roller set on a guy who has nice hair and would really enjoy being pampered. To bad you don't live in the boston area good luck and enjoy.

most of the guys that i know that are in to curlers have a strong urge to go "out" in curlers. i suppose that there are a lot of "good" reasons for this. however, the response you get depends on things that persons on this board cannot know. i suggest you start out by checking your mail, getting the paper and other quick and close to home activities-then you can gauge your level of comfort and the kind of response you will get. contrary to what you might hear, you will offend some people and anger others.

btw read david's story on the subject at "stories to make your hair curl"

MICHAEL--
This is a complicated topic about which I have ambivalence. I sometimes set my hair and sometimes have it set in a salon. Part of me says that the real power of setting your hair is that it creates a mystery -- how did he get such great hair? If one goes out in rollers, then the mistery is shattered.
Then, at the same time, I can understand the power of mild exhibitionism -- i.e. I dare do what others do not. if my hair is in rollers and the mail comes, even if I see the mail turck coming, I may go out and take the amil in hand from the mailman with whom I have a friendly chatty relationship. But then I am home based, and may also be in dirty jeans and sweatshirt because I am digging in the garden. Personally, I would never go out with my hair in rollers if I were well dressed, but might if I were casually dressed in preparation for a more formal event. If I went to the store I would tie up my head in a bandana.
There is much more to this topic than I will go into now, but there are individual psychological symbolic issues here that differ among individuals. I'd be interested in hearing discussions about this though there are other sites that might be more appropriate if most long hairs are not interested. While psychological symbolism is always particular to the individual, there were some psychoanalytic thinkers some years ago who suggested that women who go out in rollers, by disploaying a ridig object on their head, were expressing envy of a word that Victor thinks in inappropriate for this board. Could it be that guys who like to go out with rollers are enjoying displaying a symbolic phallus. This is only a question, but there is indeed a professional literature on this topic.

I have just recently tried this myself. Quite inadvertantly. I went to have my hair set at my usual place. My dry cleaner is in the same strip mall. It was five forty five and I had forgotten to pick up my stuff I need for that night so my stylist suggested I just run down to pick up my stuff. (I was already set on the top and one side when I remembered) I walked quickly past the two other stores and into the dry cleaner but the look I got was a little "surprised" But the clerk just rung me up and back I went. She finished the set and style and off I went.
It is a big step so make sure you want to take it. Sort of like having to try to unring a bell---once someone sees you. Maybe a car ride first would be good or somewhere you can use to take them out if you get too uncomfortable.

I haven't gone out in rollers but I have gone out with barrettes in my bobbed hair. Sure there are some looks but for the most part no one has said anything.

Curlers are in my opinion not an hair acessorie and you should therefore only wear curlers at the saloon and at home, if you are setting the hair by yourself. It is the same for women and men.
