Mane control

My friend has thick, straight, hip-length hair, which he usually pulls back in a ponytail with a soft fabric-covered elastic bands. Unfortunately, this doesn't really resolve two problems he faces
with his hair:
(1)even when he wears the bands most of the time, the 4 or so inches of hair at the nape of the neck/top of the shoulders slide back and forth at his shirt collar enough to tangle it quite a lot. Because his scalp is sensitive, it's a tussle to untangle it. He has begun to use a conditioner, which makes it much easier to detangle the hair, but still . . .
(2)as IT guy for a large corporation, he works on lots of machinery so he has to keep his hair behind him, so he can see what he's doing, to avoid damaging the machines -- and to avoid having the machines attack HIM.
Are there any 4- or 5-inch-wide lightweight cuffs/sleeves he could use at the nape of his neck? His hair's so heavy that it pulls the scalp too hard if he braids it down its full length (the braid winds up being 3-4 inches in circumference), so that wouldn't do. Any other ideas?
