Wings of the awkward stage
Posted by Carlos on December 14, 2000 at 19:08:03: Previous Next
Hi:
Has anyone on this board, who have grown their hair out experienced their hair forming wings right above your ears? They are also forming at the very bottom of my hair in the back. Any solutions to make these wings fly away besides the baseball cap and gel?
Thanks
Carlos

I used to get those wings too during that "in-between" stage when your hair is between your ears and shoulders. Mine were really bad...I called them ski-jumps. I could rest a pencil on them without it falling off. Thats one of the reasons I grew my hair out- because short hair only produced those dumb wings. Unfortunately for you, my experience has been that the only remedy for those things is a hat and patience ie- time. Eventually when your hair is long enough (about to your shoulders) it wont do that anymore. Do you blow-dry your hair after the shower? I found that allowing my hair to air-dry made the wing effect much worse. Try blow drying it and brushing it down at the same time. That helped for me. Good luck my man!

That's good advice. When I did this I put Frizzease mousse on my hair before blowdrying it with a brush.
One other thing - if you're tempted to trim those "wings", understand that they will just be there longer as the hair grows out again. Patience is best, and realize that it probably looks worse to you than it does to other people.

my hair is exactly the same way right now, and it gets so aggravating. the wings on the sides, and in the back...i have to wear a hat for work, which kinda covers the side ones, but the back just sticks out... and i can't really find a way to stop it. but i definately do not want to cut my hair :)

glad 2 hear you've made up your mind about keeping it long. let them grow!
There are many lessons to be learned when u grow out your hair. One of them is accepting who u r. Yes it may look a little goofy but by the time it's over it will look good and u would have learned to be more patient and comfortable with yourself.

A good way to subdue some wave/wings without looking like you used a bunch of junk on it is a non-greasy conditioner. I use Thermasilk moisturizing conditioner, smells very nice and is non greasy, and rather cheap at Walmart. It isn't a leave in conditioner, but i leave it in. I brush with my hands the excess water out of my hair so theres no dripping, and then apply a decent amount. It will feel wet and might take more time to dry , but when it does, it will look healthy and shiny and smooth out waves. Give it a try lemme know how it went. It the best hair remedy Ive ever discovered.
