To Layer or Not To Layer.....

That is the question.
I am 62 year old white male with grey hair 2" below shoulder length.
I wear it down (not ponytail, etc.) and do not have bangs.
I just comb it all 'over the top' and down the sides and back.
My hair dresser suggested she "lightly layer" my hair.
I am cautious about any cutting as "Ya can't put it back."
Will layering restrict how I style my hair in the future?
Will layering make it easier to care for?
Will it improve the looks?
What the heck is layering anyway and why should I?
Or, why should I not?

Hello,
I think this hairdressers tell else and everything what gives them possibilities to show their skills or to earn money. I would be proud and happy if I my hair will be full and not lost in the next 15 years (I am 47 now) and the only thing I would know from the stylists is how to keep it healthy and give it so much support for its growing as is possible. I think to go with long hair is a special liking and needs no partially hair cuts to satisfy some fashion rules.

Do not layer it. You will loose a lot of the thickness you have. Layering will give you a mullet, which I'm sure you don't want. About 3 weeks ago, I had the same length that you did, and my sister said that she wanted to layer it. I was pressured into doing it. Now, I have a short mullet. Not what I wanted.

i say layer it if you want to. . .just not excessively. . .contrary to other opinions on this board, layering your hair will in no shape form or fashion necessarily give you a mullet. it depends on how the stylist cuts your hair as to whether you have a mullet or not. i have naturally wavy hair, similar to yours. so if mine is all one length, which is what so many on this board seem to consider as the only possible style to have, my hair gets very fat at the bottom. thus i look like a triangle-head. not good. so, my stylist has added some very long layers, meaning layered toward the bottom 3-4 inches of my length, thus doing away with fat hair, but still leaving me with plenty of length.
let us know!
