Lice eggs cannot live on the hair ends, only on the scalp. If you think you have lice, you need to get a can of RID out and take care of it. RID mercilessly kills them in about two shampooings, but if you leave it alone, you'll get a nasty ass infestation that'll have to be professionally removed or shaven off. You don't want that.
The weak ends could be the result of many things. How often do you shampoo (overshampooing), do you wear an unhealthy hair restriction (such as a bad hat, old bandanna, crappy ponytail tie/scrunchie), do you use gel, wax, or pomade (and perhaps not shampoo them out), or maybe it's nasty dandruff? Either of these can be a part of the problem.
Wanted long hair... but going bald!

Well,
I thought I would give it a try. Went from a shaved head on January 12, to today. Not a buzz or even a trim. Then noticed I am going bald!
Now I don't know if I should bother!

That may be a "solar panel" opening up at your vertex. It doesn't look like it is very far advanced yet. Therefore, I suspect your options are these:
1: You may be a good candidate for minoxidil or perhaps finasteride (Propecia) therapy to arrest, or possibly somewhat reverse, the thinning at your crown. Minoxidil is of course readily available OTC in the United States, but finasteride would require a prescription from a dermatologist. Discussing your situation with one may be a good idea. (However, if I ever am faced with MBP, with my philosophical leanings I will probably not try to stop the process but instead make use of it to exercise the next option.)
2: You can grow a mane even with your baldness. I remain of the firm opinion that a mane growing from the fringe of even a rather extensively bald head can look thoroughly dignified and even casts an aura of wisdom about the man who grows it. I actually get to see several older men in my community who have shoulder-blade, mid-back, or even lower-back length hair from balding heads and everything still looks quite attractive -- the hair is NOT overly thin and a decent "curtain" can be formed across most of the back of the shoulders. The first association that seems to go through my mind when I see one of these men is with a "wise old sage." Long before I actually let my hair go last year I had decided that this look is one I could live with and even learn to like on me, should I ever develop MPB. (In your case particularly, your "solar panel" might not get large enough to really affect your mane for some time anyway.)
3: If for some reason you really can't stand the aging effect that the balding pattern tends to give, keeping the remaining hair buzzed quite short or even shaving it (as you apparently did for a while) in order to hide the baldness may be a good choice. However, this has always seemed to me an overly "easy" and unoriginal way out. Further, I believe that anyone who wishes to cast the aura of an independent thinker should rethink our society's rather morbid worship of youth or loathing of totally natural signs of age, and have arranged my life so that I can freely act on my longtime philosophical leanings that I should be proud, not ashamed, of all of my natural features in their naturally correct forms, including the forms they may take as I get older. Hence, trying to mask ANY normal natural sign of aging is something I would find unthinkable.
Anyone facing a decision of how to handle some facet of aging, such as baldness or facial wrinkles or graying hair, should carefully think about this question: Is my decision being based on what is most suitable for my OWN unique situations and problems, and consistent with my OWN internal philosophies, rather than being primarily influenced by what I think OTHERS or SOCIETY may prefer I do? In particular, I recognize that some others among us, for reasons not totally under their control, may have to play along with society's fear of aging more than I do, so my biases may not be best for them -- and I wouldn't hold it against them.

Thanks for the input.
I just buzzed it all off....
I feel better. I will just enjoy long hair on other men.

ok if you are going bald the first thing to do is use either Rogaine or Propecia. After 3 months you see hair growth, a light brown peach fuzz, I recommend Nioxin. Nioxin has 3 steps. First the shampoo, Bionutrient cleanser, removes DHT, 2nd Scalp Thearpy, which adds more nutrients to energize hair folicales, and Cytogen which adds more nutrients to the scalp. goto www.Nioxin.Com
I have long hair and I used Nioxin myself for 45 days. I am 27 and not going bald
After you stop using those products and If you are growing you hair long, all I can say is use a shampoo and conditioner that is right for your hair, like Suave.
Also, use purified water any water that comes from the faucet, which has much chlorine or flouride or well water like sulpher is bad for hair, either use distilled water or purified water.
good luck man, I have been growing my hair out for 1 year and it is long I am growing my hair out in 4 layers I cannt wait untill the 2nd year.
Oh yea use Amino Acids and any hair vitamin supplement. You need much protein for hair and vitamins for scalp stability

Hey Steve,
Three years ago, my hair was short with a bald spot at the crown. Since then I have been using Propecia. For the last two years, I have been letting my hair grow. It is now just past my shoulders and the bald spot is gone! I am looking forward to terminal length!
So there is not only hope, there are solutions.

Go ahead with the long hair. I'm bald on top but have long hair in a pony tail.
Probably best described as a long reverse Mohawk!

Well...
When I tie my hair back, shorter hairs always stay on top of my head, leaving a "fuzz" effect. Should I cut them? or use gel?

Don't cut them! Among them are your young hair strands, the ones that will be your long hair two years from now when the ones that are currently long have fallen out!
All longhairs have hair that doesn't make it into the pony tie, because we all have younger hair strands, of course. If it is windy or you have curly hair, the problem will be more pronounced because both these situations cause the hair to work free of the bundle of longer hairs more readily.
All you can do is take the pony tie off a few times a day and recomb your hair. Otherwise, by the end of the day you will have lots of frizz. You may find applying a gel or spray may also help.
