Yeah, I was wondering how do all of the punk rockers and other people who spike up their hair do that. I thought maybe if I knew how that could be something I could do till I get through this awkward stage. Do they use gel, hair spray, both???? Please let me know.

Beeswax, and then strong hairspray (I recommend Aquanet). Gel sucks. If its over 6 inches or so, you might try Murray's pomade.
Beeswax and pomade are in the ethnic hair sections at Walmart and pharmacies and maybe Kmart and similar stores.

Get some Knox gelatin from a grocery store. Look for directions on the net. Look for "Knox spikes" or something. Worked for me quite well till i decided to grow out long hair w/an undercut.

A girlfriend of mine who lived in London said that people there used confectionary suger mixed with water. Somehow as the hair dried, the sugar hardened enough to hold the shape. I have no idea how well this really works (if at all), and I have no idea if it would damage the hair. I just offer it as an avenue to explore....

It probably wouldn't smell too great after a day or two. Some of the stuff people use in their hair for different purposes is kind of gross (egg whites, peanut butter, mayonnaise, kool-aid for dying, and gelatin for spikes {snot-like consistency}). If you don't wash crap like this out soon, its guaranteed to get real disgusting real fast. It is better to find something that is meant for hair, when available. (beeswax, pomade, paste, hair spray)
