im a newbie at growing hair out, i usually get it cut pretty short. and im not sure what to do with it, cuz the back gets kinda long and im afraid if i grow it out i will get a mullet or something. any advice about getting it started? im looking for more of a hippie style than a pony tail style. im not sure how to describe it, just a no fuss thing i guess, same length all around.

i guess the best description i can think of is to look at either the bass player or the guitarist from phish. that is kinda the style im looking for

I dont know what the guys in phish look like, but why dont you just grow it out from an even buzz and maybe trim the nape so you dont get a ducktail like I do. I cut my nape for a month or so after a haircut until the hair above the nape grows over it and the ducktail isnt visible. Then either trim your sideburns so they dont get bushy or shave up to them if they aren't very long (as in, don't extend very far down your face) or you don't want them very long. The only time you wind up with a mullet is if you cut your hair like a mullet. As long as you don't cut the top without cutting the back, no mullet. Don't cut your bangs, either. Good luck!

I agree with what slacker said about leaving your bangs and not getting the top cut. In fact, the only thing I would recommend you get cut at all for a few months is the nape (i.e. The back of your neck) and this is just so it doesn't appear to look like a mullet. The reason for this is because until the hair at the back of your head all grows to the same length the bit of hair at the bottom of your next usually always flips up until it gets weighed down by the hair above it, like slacker said. Your biggest allie when growing your hair longer is determination. Don't listen to anyone if they take the piss as you grow it out. I am just getting past that awkward stage now and it feels even better every day that it grows.
Good luck, keep at it!!!
