a few more queries

another few queries from the dude who seems unhealthily obssesed about his hair.(is that possible?)
im always reading about how slpit ends impede growth. how can i tell if my ends are split? are there degrees of this or is it either split or not split? i have an average amount of those little hairs that dont seem to go with the rest and always kind of stick up. some of them are new i think and some are damaged. I can tell the damaged ones, what should i do with them? can i "un-damage" them? cut em out? will they eventually go away? i seem to have the most of these little hairs in a small area on the back of my head slightly below that circle thing on the very top of your head(the one were the hair grows out of in like a spiral pattern). could this be from the way i sleep?
also real quick id just like to thank everyone on the board for always helping me with my questions and i just want everyone to know how much you all have helped me through the dreaded akward stage. thanks alot.

your questions are valid- if you want long hair you want it to look good. as it gets longer, maintaining its appearance will take more time & energy. don't dismiss your queries as obsession.
split ends are damage to the hair- i believe they are caused by breakage. while they can't impede hair growth per se- that is slow the cellular output at the root level; they will shorten the length of the affected hair by breaking off- they can 'run' up the length of the hair.
identifying split ends is easy... they look just as the name suggests... the end of the hair splits in 2 giving a forked appearance. the cure is simple- cut only the affected hair below the split. lend a polite but deaf ear to those who insist on monthly 'trims' which will ultimately stop your growth in its tracks.
avoiding split ends involves taking care of your hair... brush & comb gently... avoid brushing wet hair excessively- use conditioner to help detangle- don't force tangles with a brush- detangle by hand. restrain hair (braid, ponytail) for windy conditions. when your hair is long enough a loose braid will minimize overnight tangles.

Since j.s. had clearly addressed the "split ends" problems, let me answer to your the other question:
:i seem to have the most of these little hairs in a small area on the back of my head slightly below that circle thing on the very top of your head(the one were the hair grows out of in like a spiral pattern). could this be from the way i sleep?
That "little" circular pattern on top of your head is nothing to worry about. It exists in EVERY HUMAN BEING. I do not know what the name is but chinese termed it as "scalp vortex" (loosely translated). Most of us have one of them, a handful has two and some rare few has three. That's the most it can go. The nos. depends entirely on the genes and there's nothing you could do about it. It does nor affect your hair growth or hair texture whatsoever.
No worries then.

thanks jin, but i was merely using the "scalp vortex" as a reference point to where most of my damaged hairs are.

Smaller diameter, coarser hairs at or near the crown may be the first sign of the dreaded male pattern baldness. Have you doctor check it out and get some Propecia to stop the damage before it gets worse.

I used to think that they are called "whorls". There was a discussion about this last year:
