i would like to start off by saying that this post is not meant to be sexist in any way because im sure this doesnt apply to all women. I have noticed that all the women i know personally(my mom, sister, girlfriend, etc.) tend to not take very good care of there hair. Also i always see commercials for all kinds of damaging styling products for womens hair and when i used to go get my hair cut the women were always getting perms or getting there hair relaxed and stuff. My sister and girfriend both have really long hair, and they spray hairspray in it like the second they get out of the shower. They pay very little attention to any snags and just rip right through when brushing. they blowdry every day and often use curling irons or straightening irons(is that what its called i dont know the name.) my mother has shorter hair, (mine is longer, hehe) and every day she goes through this ritual of shower, gel, blowdry, mousse, blowdry some more, put a little hairspray on top, blowdry one last time for volume.I guess i am just trying to ask if anyone else has ever noticed that women tend to care ALOT less about there hair than longhaired guys without sounding sexist. sorry if i have offended anyone.

actually my observation has been quite the opposite... while ex-g/f's, sisters, & mom do more potentially damaging things (heat, chems) to their hair, they are skilled enough with these products that their hair looks quite good. i've never really seen how other longhaired guys care for their hair- i can only speak for myself. i avoid heat & i don't color, bleach or gel my hair- neither do i use hair spray or mousse. my hair looks ~ok~... not great nor really bad- tending to frizz out & appear generally dry.

Yes , i have noticed the same thing , i dont think they care about how there hair will look in the future , i think they care what it looks like at the moment
and males with long hair care about how there hair will be in the future , thats how i see it

Interesting. I am married and have two daughters (and a son, for the record). I have observed over the years what stress women in general seem to be under from our culture to measure up to some standard, which of course, is always changing. What a woman comes with never seems to be enough. Our culture demands that they not look natural. Of course, men are subject to this game, too, but it seems to me that many of the guys on this list are interested in or are discovering the natural qualities of their hair, as it is. There is also, on this board, a strain that comes up now and again, that shows that we, too, can be driven by some image out there that we think we must live up to. But, generally speaking, I think women suffer a great deal more from the cultural pressures.

Headbanger, I think we should not generalize.
While I agree that some women do lot'sa damage to their hair (like my mum) and guys take more care for their hair (like me ;)), there are more women and men out there who are the opposite. Some women really know the "pluses" and "minuses" to long hair and some men knew absolutely nothing about it.
I think the reason why you thought of that is the reflection of what you see around you. Your mother, GF, aunts doing damage to their hair and guys from this board, talking about TLC for long hair. Perhaps you could visit Frank's "The Long Hair Site" and you'll see how many women out there took time out and shower care for their fantastic manes.
