Layers vs One length

My girlfriend has been encouraging me to get (long??) layers cut into my hair which is currently just below shoulder length and one length. She says because my hair is so thick that it would look better. She's been looking for some pictures to show her stylist who is going to do the cut and although she says she has found some guy pics, she had in her mind that the way Heather Locklear wore her hair during TJ Hooker was the best illustration of what she had in mind.
I was uncertain before about layers vs one length, but having seen the pic (which I have linked below), I am less worried about that than the general style she has in her mind. I can see what she is getting at but wonder if this is the best pic to take with us.
Any thoughts on layers vs one length and this type of style in general.
Since my girlfriend is encouraging it, I would really like to know what other girls think.
Thanks

The style in the picture appears to me to depend on blow drying to get that swept-back look, so that you'd have to be committed to styling it, and using products to prevent heat from damaging your hair. Also, it appears that some layers are short enough so that you could no longer tie all your hair back in a ponytail as a quick alternative.
As a purely subjective opinion, I think that style is ok for a guy, but borderline- close to being too feminine. Not that there's anything wrong with a guy having a feminine style if that's his choice.

I think that looks pretty good. Randy Rhoads used to have a style just like that, but his hair wasn't as long...he looked pretty cool, and I don't think it's too feminine. It's true though, that you would have to blow dry it all the time. I blow dry my hair, but just the top where my bangs and sides are shorter (kind of like Heather's, but a bit shorter). I leave the back alone and let it dry on it's own, and it's almost to my waist. Since the "feathered" look involves mostly the front part of your head, you don't really have to mess with the back. To maintain that kind of style, you would be trimming the front and sides before any real damage would occur, and by leaving the back alone, you wouldn't be damaging the hair that doesn't get trimmed as much. Definitely use a moisturizing conditioner, though...no matter what.
The picture of Randy courtesy of the Eternal Randy Rhoads site. His hair's a bit messed up, but you can see the similarity.

I think the style would be awsome for aguy these days. I will take a bit of work to keep the hair off the face... But I say you are lucky to have a woman to apreciate your long hair and it actually involved with your hair style and look.
Waiting to grow mine now.

I would like to encourag to do this style. I think it is time for men to get more different styles. And more, this style isn't feminine, there was many male popstars in the 70' and 80' they wore their hair this way and I love guys who take care about his hair.
just do it and be proud about it!
Best

Absolutely, go ahead and get it cut in layers. Heather's style is fabulous, and I think it would look great on a guy. I know it's a big step to cut one-length hair, but just look at all the other pics to see the different looks Heather can get with that cut. She even wears it tied back in a couple of the pictures! Go for it, let us know what you do, and post a pic when your'e done!

Cut it in a long layered shag - gorgeous cut kind of 70's- 80's look but real cool looking. I admire that you hair is that long - good luck.

This photo of Heather shows her wearing a classic '70s feather cut-- also known as a Farrah. It was not a true layered cut as we generally know it. It was cut in 2-3 big layers in the back and feathered in the front (layered in a steep bevel). Also, few realized that it required a full roller set. If you're still interested, fairly complete instructions are at this link. Click Farrah's pic.
Here's an entire site devoted to the '70s feathered style:

Think long and hard before going from one length to layers. Maybe the
two week rule would apply here also.

You are very fortunate that your girl friend is helping you with your hair. I know you will look so pretty with the style she suggests. Heather Locklear always looks stunning and so will you.
Can you imagine the amount of attention you will get with that Heather Locklear hair do.
Go for it.
