An Insult?????

I have had many people at school comment on my hair. Mostly all have been negative comments. But some of them are stuff like this, "... with your longhaired self." They say something before that but that is obsolete. They say it as an insult but take it as a compliment. I don't have long hair yet. I'm still in the arkward stage. I figure another 6-8 months before I finally reach my chin in the front. Also today if anybody has read the book THE OUTSIDERS (we had to read it at school) but I had people calling me the name of some of the characters because they had long hair. Yet again I take it as a compliment.
It's like growing a beard

During awkward stage: "Dude, you need to shave!"
After: "Whoa, you got a beard, looks good."
Same with hair, IMHO..

I usually get good comments on my hair. And most guys say nothing about it. sometimes they do but not much.not even when I wore them in pigtails. I even had ppl ask me if I'll wear them again. it seems to me that the girls like it. and justtake their insults as complaiments, like you're doing now. I think I'm not doing too bad for being a sophmore and hair at my chin in front.

Well,as a bearded guy I can say it's not the same-since beards are usually short and therefore take very little time to grow and much more popular among the public.

I assume you are in high school. It's really tough to do something different at your age. The only difference with adults is that most have learned to keep their reactions a little more guarded. Until recently, I have had only close family members react to my hair, which is interesting. I am 41. My parents and brothers are the only ones who had said anything, and that was that maybe I needed a haircut.
Last Sunday I was at Mass. I was going over to sign in as a reader in the liturgy. An adult, male, who has not seen me in a while came up behind me and pulled my ponytail, saying, what is this? No one has pulled my hair. Needless to say, I was thrown for a minute as to how to respond. Fortunately, I was able to turn around and smile and say: this is what happens when you stop cutting your hair.
He then proceeded to tell me that he was too old to let his hair grow out, that his was too gray and that he was losing hair. In other words, he wished he could do the same. He and I are the same age! It was, finally, a round about compliment, but it took me a minute to figure that out.
Hang in there. Be gentle with your friends' reactions. Be confident in yourself.
