Trim,trim,trim-what is it all about?

Hi.
I'm thinking seriously about stop cutting my hair and starting to grow it long-I have thick hair so I guess it's gonna be rough...
I have seen people talk about trimming all the time-what do u mean?
From former experience, when I let my hair grow it gets large in the front and sides(which is ok if i use hair moisturizer to keep it down) but on the back it isn't looking good and I understood lots of people here usually cut their hair in the back-why is it?Isn't it supposed to be important to let the hair in the back grow?Is that what you mean by trimming?

All 8 Weeks you have to trim 1cm of your Hair because when you don't do it you can become split ends ! And your hair looks better, if you let cut this litte Piece all 2 Months !
